Travel Insurance for visiting Canada

In this northern star, don’t forget these travel insurance tips for your next adventure

There's so much to see in our neighbor to the north. It's a nation of dancing Northern lights, cinematic snow-capped landscapes, and bottomless poutine. Before launching into your Canadian escapades, be sure to consider travel insurance… so you don’t end up regretting it. Here, the tips visitors to Canada may want to keep in mind.

Adventure activities

Should I chose a Standard or an Explorer Plan?

In the aptly nicknamed Great White North, outdoors activities abound. World Nomads Standard Plan covers more than 150 activities and sports that you might want to enjoy in Canada, such as backpacking, Nordic skiing on marked trails, and even bobsledding.

But if you’ll be attempting slightly more adventurous antics, consider the World Nomads Explorer Plan. It covers more sports, including hang gliding or ice climbing up to 22,956 feet – such as you might attempt with a professional guide at Banff National Park.

The Explorer Plan also has higher benefit limits, including in emergency evacuation coverage – handy if you’re in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and need to be flown to the nearest hospital.

This World Nomads Help Center article may help you decide whether the Standard or Explorer plan is right for your itinerary. The plan has exclusions that could prevent you from getting benefits, i.e. if you have an ice climbing accident while intoxicated, you will not be covered. Just remember to keep in mind that it is important to read your policy and stay safe.

What does adventure sports coverage include?

If your activity is on our Adventure Sports roster, your coverage includes:

Traveler’s tip:
that old adage about how it’s better to be safe than sorry? It’s true. Stave off frostbite (or plain old discomfort) by packing properly. If you’re visiting the farthest reaches of Canada, it’s best to be prepared for all seasons – yes, even in the summer. So be sure to pack winter weather gear like sturdy snow boots and warm gloves, in addition to a waterproof and insulated coat.

Trip delays

What does trip delay cover?

As in many northern nations, the weather in Canada can be unpredictable. That is just one reason why having a World Nomads plan in your back pocket can be a boon. If a severe ice storm or other weather delays your flight for six or more hours, you may be entitled to reimbursement up to the maximum plan benefit for your unused pre-paid, non-refundable land and water accommodations and reasonable expenses incurred because of the delay, including:

  • Hotels and other accommodation
  • Meals
  • Local transportation

Just be sure to hold on to the receipts for your expenses and your documentation on the delay from your common carrier – including scheduled departure times and actual departure times – to provide to World Nomads.

Medical emergencies

The 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team

Canada’s stringent environmental protection laws mean that its untrammeled boreal forests often include wolf, woodland caribou, and reindeer, and more. They can be a magical sight, but sometimes a worrisome one, if you’re not prepared for a getaway in the wilderness.

If your trek in the Canadian wild goes south fast, you’ll be happy to have a World Nomads plan in your (cargo) pocket. It includes a 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team that can help in the event of a sudden sickness or an injury, directing you to the nearest hospital and discussing your case with doctors.

What happens during an evacuation?

If you need an emergency evacuation, its cost may be covered under your World Nomads plan up to the maximum benefit specified in your policy, if you’ve cleared the evacuation with us, and it’s deemed medically necessary. Your emergency transportation may include: air ambulances, private motor vehicles or even land ambulances… perhaps even rescue by sled dog.

Traveler’s tip: heading to one of Canada’s 48 jaw dropping national parks?  Arm yourself with helpful visitor safety tips listed by the Canadian government at pc.gc.ca. One great one: always hike ‘after breakfast and before supper’ when animals are less active and carry bear spray… just in case you come across an unwelcome encounter.

Trip cancellation

Sometimes plans fall through or get (groan) cancelled last-minute. Maybe your sniffles turn into something more serious, or a snowstorm buries your ski lodge, turning it into a place where it’s impossible for guests to stay. Unfortunately, these things happen. Which is why having a World Nomads policy can put your mind at ease, especially when your entire trip is already paid for.

Your trip cancellation coverage could reimburse you for any pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, up to the maximum benefit amount. These expenses could include:

  • Deposits you’ve made on any package or group tours
  • Hotels, vacation rentals, and other accommodations
  • Flights, train and bus rides, and other transportation.
When you can be reimbursed for the money you’ve spent on your trip, you can regroup, replan, and embrace your next adventure.

Traveler’s tip: maybe your boat to see the puffins and fjords was cancelled because of a mechanical issue. Or the expert guide that you hired to take you kayaking alongside orcas gets sick, leaving you stranded to watch nature shows back at your hotel room. Unfortunately, these cancellations by tour operators or other travel providers aren’t covered under travel insurance. Be sure to read your policy carefully; everything covered by trip cancellation should be listed.
