If US Residents are forced to unexpectedly interrupt your trip while traveling, travel insurance benefits may help soften the blow

Even perfectly planned vacations don’t always go off without a hitch. According to Perk’s Cost of Travel Disruption Report*, 2025 saw the highest percentage of travelers affected by weather-related disruptions from the past three years. It was a 50% increase for US travelers. Weather is just one of the many things that can interrupt your trip, though.
A ‘Trip interruption’ is something that happens causing you to end your trip early or that makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while traveling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip. With a single-trip or annual travel plan that includes trip interruption insurance benefits, you may be reimbursed for the non-refundable, unused, forfeited, pre-paid payments or deposits you’ve spent for things like tours, transportation, and hotel accommodations if your trip is interrupted for a covered reason.
If you have an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you’re able to rejoin it later, additional transportation costs may be covered to rejoin your trip. If you need to return home early for a covered reason, you may also be eligible to be reimbursed for additional transportation costs.

Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip. (Our Epic and Explorer plans offer optional “Cancel For Any Reason” benefits beyond what’s included in all plans, at an additional cost and only when you purchase within the time-sensitive period. Not available to NY residents.)
Trip Delay coverage may help provide reimbursement for reasonable expenses you incur if you’re delayed for more than six hours due to a covered reason, like a documented airline delay, lost or stolen passport, and more.
Trip Interruption coverage begins after you depart on your first scheduled travel arrangement, like a flight.
Our single trip and annual travel plans all include trip interruption coverage. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you. Please view your state-specific plan document as coverage varies based on the plan you purchase.

If a terrorist incident takes place while you’re traveling, you may have coverage under your trip interruption benefits. If a terrorist attack happens in your departure city or in a city listed on your trip itinerary within 30 days of your departure date, you may also have coverage for trip cancellation if you have not yet departed on your trip. In order to be eligible for coverage, you must purchase your travel insurance plan before an incident happens. Terms and conditions apply.
Yes, if you are interrupting your trip for medical reasons, you will need to be seen by a doctor who can certify that you are not able to continue your trip. Make sure you save documentation of that, as well as receipts and invoices that show your medical expenses. You’ll need that if you plan to make a trip interruption claim.
You can log in to your member account online to start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account. You must advise us within 20 days if you are making a claim. You’ll need to provide documentation that may include things like receipts from your transportation provider or tour operator, forms showing your medical expenses, or police reports.
