You picked your destination, hotel, and booked all your activities. But there’s still one more important decision… Which travel insurance* plan should you get?

When you first start looking into travel insurance, it can be challenging to know which plan to pick. There’s not a one size fits all answer. If you’re staying closer to home and road tripping here in the US, your travel insurance needs could be different than if you are trekking through Africa.

Before you do your travel insurance plan comparison, you’ll want to think about things like where you’re going, how much you’ve spent on your trip, and what types of activities you’ll be doing.

World Nomads has multiple options available for our nomads so that you can pick the best plan for your needs. All our single trip plans offer coverage for up to 180 days; our Annual Plan offers coverage for 12 months with a maximum length of 45 days per trip. We’ll help break down some of the differences between the plans so you can do a plan comparison.

The Standard Plan

The Standard Plan is the most basic plan offered by World Nomads, but it still packs a punch. It covers more than 250 activities and may cover many of the unplanned situations you may encounter on your travels.

Some benefits in the Standard Plan include:

The Standard Plan also includes a few non-insurance services such as Pre-Trip Medical Support from Runway Health and Footprint ID and Blue Ribbon Bags. All plans also include 24/7 Emergency Assistance from our partners at Generali.

The Explorer Plan

The Explorer Plan offers everything that is covered by the Standard Plan - and more.

The Explorer Plan may be an option that our adventurous nomads want to consider. It covers more activities and adventures than the Standard Plan, and may cover things like shark cage diving, skydiving, cliff jumping, and hot air ballooning.

You’ll also see that the Explorer Plan offers a higher Maximum Benefit Amount for many benefits. For example, with the Standard Plan, you may be covered for up to $2,500 if you cancel your trip for a covered reason. With the Explorer Plan, that number goes up to $10,000. You may want to calculate the total cost of your trip and see what plan covers the non-refundable expenses, should you need to cancel it.

As you’re doing your plan comparison, you’ll find the Explorer Plan offers some additional benefits as well. You may want to take those into consideration as you’re deciding on which travel insurance plan may be best for you. One big difference is that the Explorer Plan includes coverage for rental car damage. If you're renting a car, this may be one that you want to review.

Some of the other additional benefits in the Explorer Plan include:

With this plan, you can also add on the optional ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit, if you do so within the time sensitive period. This benefit allows you to cancel your trip for any reason at all and be partially reimbursed - not just for the covered reasons included in your trip cancellation coverage. If you think there’s a possibility that you may change your mind about your trip, you may want to consider adding on this benefit. This benefit is only available, at an additional cost, to the Explorer or Epic Plans.

The Epic Plan

The Epic Plan is the most robust of the single trip plans offered by World Nomads. It’s also the priciest, but that’s because of the higher level of coverage that is included. It includes everything that is in the Explorer Plan but has higher Maximum Benefit Amounts for many of the benefits.

The trip cancellation coverage jumps up to $15,000 maximum with the Epic Plan. If you’re taking a pricier or more adventurous trip, you may want to take that into consideration when you’re doing your plan comparison. More activities are also covered, including hikes or treks at higher altitudes.

The emergency medical coverage has a $150,000 Maximum Benefit Amount with the Explorer Plan, but with the Epic plan you may have up to $250,000 of coverage. Depending on where you’re traveling, your US health insurance may not be accepted, and the emergency medical coverage in your travel insurance plan may help you be reimbursed for hotel stays, x-rays, medication, an ambulance ride, and more. Medical costs can be expensive (especially if you must be transported to a hospital far away), and the Epic Plan can be a lifeline to saving your wallet should the worst-case scenario happen to you.

The Annual Plan

The Annual Plan allows you to purchase travel insurance once for the year and be covered on almost all the trips you take that are over 100 miles from your home - even those that are here in the US. The maximum trip length is 45 days. If you know you’ll be traveling a lot and have multiple trips planned throughout the year, this may be one to look at closely when you’re doing your travel insurance plan comparison.

Some of the benefits included in the Annual Multi Trip Plan are:

The Annual Multi Plan also includes the same non-insurance services as the other plans.

Comparing Travel Insurance Plans

When you’re doing your plan comparison, think about how many trips you have planned for the year, and the types of things you’ll be doing on your trip. Also think about how much you’ve invested in your trip. A summer traveling around Europe is different from a weekend camping trip in your home state. For pricier trips, you may want to consider more coverage. For the elevated plans, you’re going to pay more, but you’ll also have higher benefit limits and be covered for more things.

We suggest that you get a quote for travel insurance so you can see what is covered under each plan. Read the plan wording, and do a plan comparison of the different options. Make sure you pay attention to the benefits offered with each plan, as well as the Maximum Benefit Amounts for each.  If you don't understand anything, you can contact us anytime, and we can help explain what’s included with each plan.

Baggage Delay in a Delhi Winter.

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. It was cold in Delhi (being winter, December) and my warm jacket was in my bag, requiring that I purchase a jacket and other items of warm clothing that I had not taken in my carry-on.
