Travel insurance is designed to protect you from financial losses due to unexpected incidents you encounter while travelling. These incidents can be in the form of medical emergencies, flight delays, lost luggage, trip cancellations, and more. World Nomads has four different plans for Canadians, each with differing benefits and policy limits designed to suit all kinds of travellers.
In most countries, travel insurance isn’t mandatory, but it’s strongly recommended. Cover for accidents, medical emergencies, cancellations, delays and lost luggage can help protect you against unexpected costs. Whether you’re in a major city or off adventuring in a more remote location, it’s reassuring to know you can get the help you need – especially when it comes to an accident or sudden illness. Keep in mind that if you’re going on a cruise or joining an organised tour, travel insurance is likely to be required.
You’ll want to consider several factors when deciding which travel insurance plan to pick. These include:
To be eligible for coverage under this policy you must:
To be eligible for trip cancellation coverage you must:
To be eligible for all other coverage under this policy, you must be covered under your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your aggregate limit for all emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.
If you’ve left Canada without travel insurance or your plan has run out and you’re still on the road, World Nomads can still offer you coverage. With World Nomads, you can buy a plan online anytime, from almost anywhere in the world. You will be eligible for immediate coverage for certain accidents but may be subject to a waiting period for other benefits.
The cost of travel insurance depends on a range of factors including:
You can pick a single, couple or family plan. Up to seven dependents under the age of 25 may be added to your single-trip plan for no additional charge. All parties on a plan need to reside in the same province and be Canadians.
Be sure to plan out what activities you’ll be doing on the trip and match them up to the Activity Level needed as listed on this page. When you get a quote, you’ll first pick your plan then add the activities you’ll be doing – you will then be given a price quote.
Making a claim is a straightforward process.

Our travel insurance plans cover quite a bit, but they do not cover everything. Here is a list of things that are never covered:
Be sure to read the plan documents to learn of other terms, conditions and exclusions. If you have questions, give us a call.
Each policy includes a '10-Day Right to Examine' period, giving you time after purchase to review the details, making sure the coverage works for you. If you're unsatisfied for any reason, you can cancel the plan and receive a full refund provided you:
To cancel, you need to sign into your membership, choose your plan and follow the links to cancel.
The travel insurance plans from World Nomads could include travel insurance benefits that cover lost or stolen travel documents, provided you did everything you could to protect your property. You can claim up to the maximum limit stated in the policy towards the replacement of your passport or other travel documents, like visas. Read your policy for more details. Passport coverage falls under the Baggage, Personal Effects and Sporting Equipment section. Make sure you contact the Canadian embassy right away so they can start the process of getting you a replacement travel document, and remember to be patient! This process can take time. If your travel is delayed or interrupted as a result, you may be eligible for benefits under those protections as well.
Yes, trip cancellation coverage allows you to cancel your trip before departure for specific covered reasons, such as illness or unforeseen events. All World Nomads plans cover trip cancellation for covered reasons, but our Epic and Explorer plans also offer optional Cancel For Any Reason cover, giving you more flexibility if your plans change.
Trip interruption cover helps if your journey is cut short after it’s already begun. If you need to return home early or miss part of your itinerary due to a covered reason, it may reimburse prepaid, non-refundable travel costs.
