Travel Insurance: What can I claim for?

Travel insurance is designed to help cover your expenses if something unexpected goes wrong on your trip. It’s not a substitute for your primary health insurance, and it won’t cover non-essential overseas medical treatment, such as routine exams.

What am I covered for?

To give you an idea of benefits you may be able to claim, our policies offer cover (up to policy limits) for benefits including:

Note: you should always refer to your Policy Document for the full description of benefits and exclusions and of course you can always contact us with any questions or concerns.

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything so make sure you read your Policy Document for what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Some of the main things that aren’t covered include:

  • Any existing medical condition
  • Where care is available under any Reciprocal Health Care Agreement
  • Any medical expenses incurred within New Zealand
  • Expenses which are not reasonable or medically necessary; routine treatment; elective treatment.
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a ‘Do not travel’ warning issued by the New Zealand Government (see safetravel.govt.nz).
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the Policy Document.

How do I make a claim on my travel insurance?

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
