Travel Insurance for Family Emergencies

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Cancelling travel plans is always disappointing – particularly when you had a date with the pyramids of Giza or a visit to the top of the Empire State Building. But if one of your immediate family members is sick and really needs you home, you may be covered for cancelled flights and other pre-paid, nonrefundable trip costs.

What does your coverage offer?

You may be covered for trip cancellation or interruption if any of the following people dies or develops a medical condition that prevents you from travelling, as certified by a physician:

  • You or your travel companion.
  • Your non-traveling family member

If we approve your claim, we may be able to help with any prepaid, nonrefundable, unused travel expenses, up to the maximum limit of your plan.

How do you define ‘family’?

When we use the term ‘family’ in our plan descriptions, the following relationships are applicable:

  • Spouse, civil union partner, or domestic partner
  • Children, children-in-law, stepchildren, foster children, ward or legal ward
  • Siblings, siblings-in-law, stepsiblings
  • Parents, parents-in-law, stepparents, legal guardians or guardians
  • Grandparents or grandchildren
  • Aunts or uncles
  • Nieces or nephews

What may not be covered?

While we provide reasonable coverage for family members, we can’t cover every single scenario. Coverage is not available for the following situations:

  • A family member’s pre-existing condition that was not stable and controlled.
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery or routine physical examinations.
  • Any situation not involving a family member as defined in your insurance plan.

If you are concerned about a scenario not covered here, you may want to consider the optional ‘cancel-for-any-reason' benefit. If you have an Explorer or Epic plan, by adding this benefit (for an additional charge), you can cancel your trip for any reason. You must purchase this added benefit during the time-sensitive period

If you have any questions, please contact us, we’d be happy to help.
