It’s never been easier to unplug and take off, now that you can work and study remotely anywhere, anytime – assuming there’s good Wi-Fi, of course.

But travel glitches can arrive in all shapes and sizes, even with the most meticulous planning. Although it’s great to hope for the best, it may be wiser to make your move with travel insurance.

What is a flexcation?

Because of flexible work and school schedules, more travelers are opting to take 'flexcations', extended stays away from home that are mixture of leisure and work, or going to school remotely, either domestically or abroad.

Do I need travel insurance for flexcations?

If you’re planting yourself in a different place while working and playing, there are a few questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping around for a travel insurance policy. How long am I staying? What kind of medical coverage do I need? Am I taking along personal belongings that I can’t stand to lose? Is my entire family covered? How much am I spending on pre-paid deposits?

Just as planning a trip requires a jumble of components, there's a lot to consider when buying travel insurance and specifically for the needs of flexcations. Here are a number of ways that that travel insurance can help on a trip that combines business and pleasure.

What's covered for flexcations?

Whether you’re seeking a quiet haven or an outdoor adventure, World Nomads has ways to support you:

  • Repair or replacement of personal-use electronics, including mobile phones, laptops, and tablets
  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits for work emergencies such as a bankruptcy or merger that you’re directly involved in, being required to work or a natural disaster that has made your company unsuitable to continue business
  • Emergency medical expenses for sudden accidents and sicknesses
  • Family coverage or group plans for up to 2 adults and 7 dependent children
  • Long-term coverage up to 180 days, with the option to purchase an additional plan for trips longer than the maximum duration.

What's not covered for flexcations?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. These are some things that don’t fall under the scope of your plan:

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Any electronics or other equipment that you use for professional purposes
  • A sudden loss of your job has left you unemployed
  • Any items lost, stolen or damaged that are unsupervised or unattended
  • Any adventure sports that aren’t covered by our policies
  • Certain items such as cash, credit cards and sports equipment damaged while in use
  • Rental vehicles, such as RV or campervans, off-road vehicles, luxury cars, or motorbikes
  • Any costs related to illegal activities or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Staying for an extended period of time or moving to a country as an expat? Consider whether you need a travel health insurance as opposed to a travel insurance plan. To read more about the differences, go to our page on travel health insurance

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
