Am I covered for urgent medical treatment when abroad?

Our travel insurance* plans for Amercan travelers provide coverage for emergency medical expenses if you suffer a covered illness or injury during your travels. The maximum limits for coverage depend on which single-trip or annual plan you bought.

What's covered if I need urgent medical treatment?

Your coverage may include the following when ordered by a medical professional as a necessary treatment and can’t wait until your return home to the United States:

  • Hospital stays, including the use of an operating room.
  • Services of a Physician.
  • X-rays, laboratory tests, and anaesthetics.
  • Drugs, medicine, and therapeutic services.
  • Ambulance services.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. The following situations are excluded from coverage:

  • If you've used drugs or alcohol.
  • Any reckless or illegal behavior.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not regular health insurance; it's for travel health emergencies).
  • Pre-existing medical conditions as defined in your policy wording, unless you purchased during the time-sensitive period and have a waiver.
  • Care or treatment that is payable under any other insurance policy.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.

What do you do if you have a medical emergency

The 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is here to help in the case of an emergency and must be contacted immediately (or as soon as reasonably possible) if you:

  • Are admitted to hospital.
  • Need emergency medical evacuation or repatriation.
  • Need help finding the closest hospital.
  • Are injured or have an accident requiring urgent medical attention.
  • Have had to be transported to hospital by ambulance.
  • Need emergency dental treatment due to an accidental injury.

Be sure to provide proof of your travel insurance to hospitals or medical centers administering your care and save all related receipts – you’ll need them when you make a claim.

The team can help with locating suitable medical facilities, verifying your travel insurance coverage, and monitoring your care throughout the emergency.

For more details, including information on what’s not covered, read the details of your plan. Not sure which plan is right for you? You can compare benefits, limits and exclusions when you get a quote.
