What does the “time-sensitive period” mean?

After you’ve made the tough decision of choosing the perfect vacation destination, you may want to think about how to protect your trip with travel insurance coverage. Even though you can purchase a plan anytime (even when you’re already traveling), the timing of your purchase may affect your benefits. If you purchase the Explorer or Epic protection plan within the time sensitive period of 7 days of your initial trip deposit or payment being received, you may also be eligible for additional insurance components and plan offerings that could be valuable to you on your trip.

The initial deposit or payment could come in the form of purchasing a plane ticket or booking a hotel. It can also look like buying a tour or museum ticket. Whenever you put down money to secure your travels, this is when the time sensitive period starts. You then have 7 days to purchase either the Explorer or Epic Plan to be eligible for the additional components. Additional terms may apply. For more details you can compare the benefits of each plan side-by-side when you get a quote for travel insurance and non-insurance services.

Travel Safety Tips

When you get a quote for travel insurance and non-insurance services, we suggest comparing the benefits of each plan side-by-side so that you can choose the plan that best fits your needs. The Standard Plan is the cheapest, but the Explorer and Epic plans have higher maximum benefit amounts and additional benefits, including some that you could become eligible for if you purchase your plan within the time-sensitive period. If you’re a part of the 39% of Americans who take more than three trips per year*, you may also be interested in the annual plan.

Here are a few other travel tips that have benefitted us in our own travels:

  • Check out the US government’s safety warnings for your destination before traveling. This is where the US Department of State lists any current advisories. You can also learn about any natural disasters that your destination is prone to, and see if good medical care is widely available in the locations where you’ll be.
  • Sign up for portable health records. This is one of the non-insurance services included when you purchase a World Nomads plan. This is a secure solution that allows you to have immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world. If you’re traveling and end up having a medical emergency, it’s helpful for your medical team to know about important things such as your prescriptions, allergies, and medical conditions.
  • Check vaccination requirements before you go. Your World Nomads plan includes pre-trip medical support, and a team of US-licensed physicians can prescribe you vaccinations and medications that you may need for the destinations where you will be traveling. The medications will be delivered to your door, and you can take your vaccination prescription to your local pharmacy.
  • Consider traveling with a carry-on This is the best way to avoid bags getting lost or delayed by your airline. If you must check a bag, make sure your medications, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and orthodontic devices are in your carry-on. You won’t want to be without those things and these items may be excluded from your baggage and personal effects travel insurance benefit.
  • Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance Team in your phone, as well as the plan number for the travel protection plan you purchased. In remote areas, you may not have cell service or electricity to charge your phone, so it’s not a bad idea to have a copy of this printed as well. You won’t want to be searching for that information if you have an emergency.
  • Save all receipts for everything you’ve purchased for your trip. If you need to make a claim, you’ll need to provide documentation that could include receipts, medical reports and more.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for time-sensitive periods. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • How long is the “time-sensitive period?”
The time sensitive period means insurance must be purchased within 7 days of the date your initial payments or deposits for your trip is received. Purchasing the Explorer or Epic travel protection plan from World Nomads in the time sensitive period may be eligible for additional benefits that could be valuable for your trip.
  • What is considered the first deposit?
This deposit or payment can come in the form of purchasing a plane ticket or booking a hotel. It can also look like buying a tour or museum ticket. Whenever you put down money to secure your travel arrangements, this is when the time sensitive period starts. You then have 7 days to purchase either the Explorer or Epic Plan to become eligible for the additional components. Additional terms may apply.
  • Does Optional Cancel for Any Reason coverage let you cancel if you change your mind?

If you buy your plan within 7 days of making your first trip deposit or payment, you can then add on the optional ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit at an additional cost. The cancel for any reason benefit allows you to cancel your trip for any reason not already covered by the plan. Meaning you may be partially reimbursed for non-refundable, prepaid and unused payments you’ve made towards your trip. Say you’ve broken up with your partner, your dog got sick or you’ve simply changed your mind about going; you may now get partial reimbursement. This benefit is especially handy for those trips that are big investments or booked far in advance. Additional terms and conditions apply. Not available to NY residents.
