Does my travel insurance cover me if I am travelling on a one-way ticket?

If you’re travelling on a one-way ticket and don’t have a return flight booked the good news is you can still be covered by our travel insurance policies, but there are some things to be aware of.

What am I covered for on a one-way ticket?

World Nomads offers cover for all the usual benefits on our policies including cover, up to policy limits, for:

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs.

How can I purchase a travel insurance policy without a return ticket?

You don’t need a return ticket to purchase one of our policies. Simply go online and get a quote 24/7. You can also buy the policy while already travelling with or without a ticket home.

Can I make a claim if I don’t have a return ticket?

If you need to make a claim on your policy, you can get the process started online. If you have an emergency and need help, you can contact our Emergency Assistance Team.

What if I need to come home due to an insured event?

As the cost of a return ticket is considered a part of any normal trip, in the event that you need to return to New Zealand due to an insured event, the cost of a ticket home is not covered under this policy. If you must return home and you don't have a return ticket, we'll deduct from your claim either:

  • the cost you would have normally paid for an economy class airfare at the carrier’s regular published rates for your journey home; or
  • our actual cost incurred.

But we’ll always deduct the one that’s the lesser amount.

If you have no other claim from which we can deduct this cost, we'll seek recovery of the cost of the transport home directly from you, following your return home.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
