At a glance

  • World Nomads offers four travel insurance plans for your trip to Nicaragua. Plans range from standard to higher-limit protections.
  • Coverage may apply to popular Nicaragua activities like surfing, hiking and scuba diving.
  • Policies for Canadians include protection for medical emergencies, trip delays and lost luggage.

Nicaragua packs in plenty of adventure and culture, and you’ll want to explore it all. With authentic local experiences and fewer crowds than many other Central American hotspots, it’s a destination on the rise. Whether you’re navigating bustling markets, snorkelling off the Corn Islands or hiking up to the rim of a smoldering volcano (there are 19 active volcanoes), a little planning goes a long way. Travel insurance can give you the confidence you need to focus on the experience, while staying prepared for the unexpected.

Travel insurance for adventure activities in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is made for adventure with a raw, varied landscape that begs you to get out and explore. Hike through misty cloud forests to active volcanoes or hit the surf on the Pacific coast, where consistent waves roll into laid-back towns all year round. Inland, swim, kayak or paddleboard at Laguna de Apoyo, a deep volcanic crater lake ringed by jungle. Not done yet? Zipline through forest canopies, board down the ashes of Cerro Negro volcano, and dive into the depths to discover underwater reefs and wrecks.

Common insurance considerations for Nicaragua

Food and water safety

A few simple precautions can help you avoid traveller’s diarrhea. Stick to bottled or filtered water, avoid ice and choose freshly cooked food served hot. If you do get sick, the emergency medical coverage travel insurance benefit may reimburse necessary emergency medical expenses while travelling. If local care is inadequate in your immediate area, the emergency medical evacuation and repatriation benefit may cover transport to the nearest adequate medical facility or home for treatment if you suffer an injury or illness that is severe, acute or life-threatening.

Petty theft

Crime can be an issue in Nicaragua, with theft and more serious incidents calling for a high degree of caution. Crowded markets and public transport are prime spots for pickpockets and bag snatchers. If your belongings do get stolen, your travel insurance could cover the cost to replace your stolen items (subject to depreciation). Just make sure you tell local police as soon as it happens and get a written report. You will need this documentation if you plan to make a claim.

Trip cancellation

The best trips are often the ones you’ve planned months in advance, but you can’t predict the future and unexpected situations can sometimes happen before you even set off. Trip cancellation coverage is included in all single-trip and annual travel insurance plans offered by World Nomads and gives you the opportunity to cancel your trip before you depart – but only for covered reasons. Optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. Broke up with your partner? You can cancel your trip. Sick dog? You can stay home to care for your fur baby. Change your mind about travelling? There’s no judgment here.

Lost luggage

Nothing gets a trip off to a rocky start quite like arriving without your bags. If your checked luggage is lost or delayed on your way to Nicaragua, travel insurance benefits may help reimburse you for lost items. Keep original receipts for any personal items you purchase – such as toothbrushes, prescription medication or a change of clothes. The first step is always to report missing luggage to your carrier and check what compensation they may provide.

Tips for travelling to Nicaragua

  • Stick to well-known tourist areas, avoid travelling alone or at night and be extra careful in quieter or remote locations where police presence can be limited.
  • Use only official taxis with red number plates and avoid public transport where possible. Registered taxi drivers display their driver identification (with photo) prominently on the dashboard.
  • Street food can be safe and delicious but opt for stalls with high turnover and peel fruit yourself where possible.
  • Before you leave Canada, check the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Nicaragua to review the latest advice.
