Broken or chipped teeth can happen at any time. It can be seeded bread in Berlin, olives in Athens, or dried fish in Krasnodar. If pain suddenly strikes, World Nomads travel insurance may cover your emergency dental treatment to help you get relief.

What does travel insurance cover for overseas dental?

World Nomads policies offer cover for dental expenses if you have to see a dentist while travelling, for the immediate relief of sudden pain to natural or permanently attached artificial teeth if:

  • You experience an unforeseen occurrence of sickness or injury resulting in the necessity of immediate emergency dental treatment.
  • You've broken your tooth and require emergency dental treatment.
  • You need emergency dental treatment due to an accidental blow to your face or mouth.

The amount of cover will depend on which plan – Standard vs Explorer – you buy and is available for international trips or for domestic trips outside your home province. Be sure to always read the policy wording carefully as terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions may apply.

You must be covered under your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the duration of your trip.

The portion of the expenses claimed should not be covered by your GHIP or any other related insurance or reimbursement plan.

Travel insurance tip: Your dental illness or injury must be confirmed in writing by your treating medical practitioner overseas. You must get copies of all medical and dental records, reports, and clinical notes before you leave the hospital or medical facility as well as original receipts to document your expenses so we may verify your claim. Coverage is limited to the amount shown in the policy wording.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common dental claims we don’t cover include but are not limited to:

  • General check-ups.
  • Getting your teeth straightened in Thailand.
  • New teeth or fillings following pain-relieving treatment.
  • Major dental work, such as crowns, dentures, bridges, and implants.
  • If you've bought a policy after the pain has set in.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies).

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about dental insurance. If you can't find what you're looking for here, get in touch with our customer service team and they can provide clarification.

  • How do I claim for any dental treatment?
If you’ve had to see a dentist while on your trip and you receive dental treatment, then you will need to get a medical report confirming the dental injury, illness or sickness and also that the treatment received was required for the immediate relief of sudden and acute onset of pain, to support your claim. Contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible so they can provide guidance and answer any questions you may have.
  • Why can’t I get treated for any dental issues I may have?
Our emergency dental coverage provides cover for dental treatment which is required due to an unforeseen occurrence of sickness or injury occurring on a trip that results in the necessity for immediate emergency dental treatment by a licensed registered dentist, physician or hospital. This means that major dental work like crowns, bridges, dental prostheses, treatment involving the use of precious metals and cosmetic dentistry will not be covered. With this in mind, any dental surgery or other medical treatment which, in the opinion of your attending medical practitioner, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team or us, that can be delayed until your return home, will not be covered.
