Nicaragua has so much to offer travelers - whether that be nature, nightlife, history, or beaches. You can surf all day and enjoy the nightlife in San Juan del Sur, check out the colonial architecture in Granada, and swim among the unusual rock formations in the Somoto Canyon.

A trip to the ruins of Leon Viejo will take you to one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas, and you may even get lucky enough to spot toucans and monkeys as you hike at Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve.

There are so many adventures that await in Nicaragua, but there are also some things to be aware of. We encourage you to check out our tips on things to know before traveling to Nicaragua. You may also want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance for protection against some of the unexpected things that can happen during your travels.

Do I need travel insurance for Nicaragua?

You booked the flights to Managua and booked a private tour of the Masaya Volcano. Even if you’ve taken the steps to plan an awesome vacation, there are some things you just can’t plan for.

Nobody wants to think about things like canceled trips, delayed baggage and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly.

Hiking through Miraflor’s cloud forest is an amazing experience - unless you get hurt and need to see a doctor.

There’s also a possibility that natural disasters can affect your travels. What happens if an earthquake disrupts your travel plans? You may then wish you had travel insurance for Nicaragua.

Depending on where you’re from, you’ll have at least two plans to choose from. When you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance coverage for activities in Nicaragua

World Nomads covers at least 150 activities for travelers going to Nicaragua - including surfing and hiking. Want to explore Nicaragua from beneath the surface? No problem! Scuba diving among the spectacular corals around the Corn Islands may also be covered. Kayaking through the mangroves of Isla Juan Vanado may be covered too.

Not all activities are covered under every plan so it’s helpful to have an idea of what adventures you’ll be going on to get the most accurate quote. An advanced itinerary will help you choose the best insurance for your trip—and make sure even your most daring adventure is covered.

We cover more than 150 activities you love + more

Here are several activities under each category that World Nomads love to do:

Not all activities, sports, and experiences are covered under every plan. You may have to upgrade the policy and sporting level to receive the cover you require for the activities you plan to do. Please read your policy wording carefully before you buy.

Travel insurance benefits for medical emergencies in Nicaragua

Nobody plans to get sick or injured on vacation, but it happens. Reliable health care can be limited in Nicaragua and standards may be different than in your home country.

What happens if you have an accident while climbing Volcano Concepcion? With an international travel insurance plan, you may be reimbursed for certain emergency medical expenses like an ambulance, hospital stay, or medication prescribed to treat your emergency medical condition.

If you get injured or fall sick during your trip and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and your treating physician recommend that you travel back because of your medical condition, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Nicaragua may cover the costs to get you there.

If you have a medical emergency after you’ve left home, you can call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. You must contact our emergency assistance team before seeking medical attention, unless your emergency medical condition prevents you from calling. If this case, you should call as soon as medically possible or have someone call on your behalf.

Travel insurance benefits for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Nicaragua

Even if you’ve planned the perfect getaway to Nicaragua, sometimes things happen that can cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.

Nicaragua has multiple active volcanoes such as Concepcion and San Cristobal. They can be fascinating to see, but they aren’t as fun if volcanic ash messes up your flight schedules.

Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and it gets interrupted. For example, you may need to go home early if an immediate family member back home has an unexpected medical emergency or dies.

Travel insurance coverage for lost bags in Nicaragua

What happens if you land in Managua, but your bags don’t? If you’re left sitting at the airport carousel anxiously waiting for the bag that never comes, the baggage coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Nicaragua may help you be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until your bag makes its way to you.

Sometimes your bags aren’t just delayed but they never come at all. If that happens, you could be covered for the cost of replacing your belongings (up to plan limits) if the airline isn’t able to remedy the situation. You will be asked to prove that you own what you are claiming for, so be sure to save receipts and take photos so you can file a lost luggage claim.

Travel insurance coverage for crime in Nicaragua

Even though locals have a reputation of being friendly, crime is still a problem in Nicaragua. Pickpocketing is common, and you’ll want to be extra careful when you're in crowded areas like markets or using public transportation. Pay attention to your surroundings, avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets, and never take your hands off your bags. You’ll also want to leave the flashy jewelry at home.

Even when you’re being cautious, things can happen. If you’re robbed, make sure you  file a police report and save a copy - you’ll need that if you have to make a claim.

Just make sure you’re doing your part to try to avoid lost and stolen items. If you  overindulge on the Flora de Cana and leave your phone in a bar, we won’t be able to  cover that.

Tips for traveling to Nicaragua

Before you leave home, we encourage you to look into any advisories that may exist at that time, from weather to political instability. Demonstrations and civil unrest may occur, and even peaceful demonstrations can become violent. Stay away from areas where these are happening - Nicaraguan law prohibits political activity by foreigners.

If you purchased travel insurance for Nicaragua, it’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your policy number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

True Claims Stories

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.
