Travel Insurance for the Czech Republic

Travel advice for Canadians visiting Prague and the Czech Republic

At a glance

  • World Nomads offers four travel insurance plans for your trip to Prague. Plans range from standard to higher-limit protections.
  • Coverage may apply to popular activities in Prague like rock climbing, skydiving and hiking
  • Policies for Canadians include protection for medical emergencies, trip interruptions and lost luggage.

While Prague often steals the spotlight – and why wouldn’t it – it’s well worth exploring the smaller towns that unfold around market squares and castle towers, their strong café and beer culture woven into everyday life. The Czech Republic is easy to explore, with short distances, good transport and an unhurried feel. Before you leave Prague, though, walk the beautiful Charles Bridge at sunrise and again at sunset for two dramatically different experiences. If you’re hoping to master some Czech words to help you get around the country, you might want to think again – it’s among the most complicated languages in the world. What will help you navigate any hiccups that arise on your trip to the Czech Republic is travel insurance.

The Czech Republic offers a mix of low-key outdoor experiences and high-octane thrills. Ride horses through open fields and forest trails to a lake, where horse bathing adds a memorable twist to the day. Paddle along the scenic Berounka or Sázava rivers, stopping at historic sites and riverside pubs along the way; cycle (or dust off your inline skates) and whizz along forest tracks in the Orlické Mountains; or get your adrenaline pumping on a rock climbing, whitewater rafting or skydiving adventure.

Common insurance considerations for Czech Republic

Trip cancellation

The best trips are often the ones you’ve planned months in advance, but you can’t predict the future – unexpected situations can arise before you even set off. Trip cancellation coverage is included in all single-trip and annual travel insurance plans offered by World Nomads and gives you the opportunity to cancel your trip before you depart – but only for covered reasons. Optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. Broke up with your partner? You can cancel your trip. Sick dog? You can stay home to care for your fur baby. Change your mind about travelling? There’s no judgment here.

Missing luggage

Nothing gets a trip off to a rocky start quite like arriving at Prague Airport without your bags. If your checked luggage is lost or delayed, travel insurance benefits may help reimburse you for lost items. Keep original receipts for any personal items you buy – like a toothbrush, prescription medication or a change of clothes. The first step is always to report missing luggage to your airline or other common carrier and check what compensation they may provide.

Accidents and medical emergencies

No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to the hospital, you’ll be thankful you sorted your travel insurance before you left home. Struck by a car crossing the street? Fell off your bike and need stitches? Came down with a bad bout of food poisoningEmergency assistance is a phone call away.

Lost or stolen gear

Even the most careful of travellers can face that sinking feeling – realising they’ve left a passport or wallet on the train, or that an opportunist has taken off with their phone or camera and there's no hope of getting it back. Whether you bought the lost or stolen item on your trip (and have the receipts to show for it) or carried it with you from home, travel insurance may be able to reimburse you for some or all of an item’s value.

Tips for travelling to the Czech Republic

  • The EES (Entry/Exit System) in the Czech Republic requires all non-EU visitors to have their biometric data recorded – it’s free but there have been reports of fraudulent websites misleading travellers, claiming they must register and pay fees before travelling to the EU/Schengen area.
  • Watch for currency confusion – the Czech Republic uses the koruna (CZK), not the euro.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of strangers offering help or asking to see your passport.
  • Stay aware at night – cities are generally safe, but it’s best to stick to well-lit areas and travel with others where possible.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for the Czech Republic. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Do Canadians need ETIAS or EES to enter the Czech Republic?

Yes – travel rules are changing. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) replaces passport stamps with biometric checks like fingerprints and photos at borders to the 29 countries within the Schengen area, including the Czech Republic. The ETIAS travel authorisation is expected to launch in late 2026. Once in place, Canadians will need to apply online before travelling to the Schengen Area, including the Czech Republic.

  • Is the Czech Republic part of the Schengen Area?
Yes, the Czech Republic is part of the Schengen Area. This means you can travel between most European countries without border checks, but your total stay across the region is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Is the Czech Republic safe for tourists?
The Czech Republic is generally a safe destination, with low levels of violent crime. Petty theft can occur in busy areas like Prague’s Old Town and at train stations, so keep valuables secure and stay aware of your surroundings.
  • What do I do if I need emergency assistance?
