There are more hidden gems in Italy than there are varieties of pasta. Whatever your adventure, we’re here to help.

Rome’s Colosseum is a popular spot for Canadian travellers, but we encourage you to check out some of the other great spots in Italy as well. You could sample an after-dinner limoncello while watching an Amalfi sunset or you may include Lecce on your itinerary, which has been called the “Florence of the South.”

While a trip to Italy is an amazing experience, there are some things to be aware of. We encourage you to check out our tips for visiting Italy before leaving Canada so you can be prepared. Some of our tips include dealing with the currency conversions and train travel. However, our biggest tip? Pack World Nomads travel insurance!

Do I need travel insurance for Italy?

International travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises. Some of those are great – like accidentally discovering a quiet restaurant that has the best pizza you’ve ever eaten.

Some surprises that come along with overseas travel are not that great, such as unexpected flight delays and lost bags. A good travel insurance plan for Italy could help with these situations. It could also help you get the emergency medical care you need if you get injured participating in any of the adventures and activities you’ll find in Italy.

There are different plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare our plans  determine the best travel insurance for your international travel needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Italy

There are so many things to see and do in Italy. Your Italian adventure may include hiking Sila National Park in Calabria, skiing the Dolomites, or taking a swim along the coastline of Sardinia. World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadians travelling to Italy-including hiking, skiing, and swimming.

When you get a quote for your travel insurance for Italy, you’ll need to list your planned activities. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.  If you are participating in an activity that you haven’t listed in your policy, you can contact us to determine if you will be covered.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Italy

If you get sick or injured on your trip, your  may only pay a small portion, if any, of your medical expenses in Italy. In some situations, medical providers may require  a payment guarantee or payment  upfront. The Canadian government recommends that Canadians get travel insurance for Italy that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays. Your travel insurance plan may provide reimbursement for expenses you incur due to a medical emergency.

In some rural areas, you may find limited services available, or find that your medical team doesn’t speak English or French. If you have a medical emergency when travelling to Italy, you can call our 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your Italian medical team if language is a barrier.

If you have an emergency and need to make a claim, you’ll need to call and report your emergency as soon as it happens, or as soon as you are able. You must contact us prior to seeking medical attention or if your medical condition prevents you from calling, call us as soon as reasonably possible. Also remember to save all paperwork and receipts.

Travel insurance for lost bags in Italy

What happens if you board your flight in Canada, and then realize that you made it to Italy, but your bags didn’t?  If the airline loses your bag, you could be reimbursed for a change of clothes or toiletries until you and your bag are reunited. If that reunion never happens, you could be reimbursed for your lost bags and belongings with the baggage coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Italy. You will need to work with your airline to recover your bags or obtain reimbursement. Once you have exhausted the benefits available to you by your transportation carrier, you can submit a claim under your World Nomads travel insurance. You will need to submit a letter of coverage or denial from the transportation carrier, a written report regarding the theft or damage, and original receipts or sales slips as supporting documentation when you submit your claim.

Italy is known for its luxury shopping, and we know it can be tempting to carry your souvenirs back home to Canada in your new Dolce & Gabbana backpack that you bought in Milan. While baggage coverage is included, just know there are policy limits. You may want to take your high dollar bag with you as a carry on instead of checking it.  If you have any questions, contact us and we can help explain what is covered.

Travel insurance for stolen items in Italy

Pickpocketing is something to watch out for when you travel to Italy – especially in crowded tourist areas like Rome, Florence, and Venice. These areas tend to be even more crowded during the summer, so you’ll want to be extra cautious during those times.

One nomad had her iPhone stolen when on the train in Milan.   We are happy that the World Nomads travel insurance plan she purchased for her Italian adventure covered

Review our tips for avoiding pickpocketing in Italy before your trip, and always be aware of your surroundings. If anything does happen, make sure you contact the police and file a report. Need assistance? Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Italy

Sometimes you have the perfect getaway planned, but things happen that may cause you to  cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.

If you get sick before leaving Canada and your doctor tells you not to travel to Italy at that time, you could be forced to cancel your trip.

It’s also possible for natural disasters to affect your trip. Mount Etna is located in Sicily and is Europe’s most active volcano. An eruption could cause flight problems that prevent you from getting to your destination as planned, and your trip may be interrupted. You could also face flooding in Venice in the fall or winter. During those times, some businesses may  close and you may not be able to participate in all of your planned activities. Our plans provide coverage if, after you have booked your trip to Italy and purchase your travel insurance, the Canadian government issues a travel advisory to a destination, country or region listed on your travel itinerary.

If you have travel insurance for Italy, and something unexpected happens that causes you to cancel, delay, or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses. Travel insurance does not cover everything. The insurance policy will outline the covered risks for trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay for your trip to Italy.
