  • Plans include non-insurance services and travel insurance benefits for 250+ adventure sports and activities
  • You may be reimbursed for things such as x-rays, a hospital visit, and prescription medication (up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits)
  • If there’s not adequate treatment in your immediate area, you may be transported to the nearest suitable medical facility where treatment is available
  • You may be covered for the costs to travel back home to the US if your medical provider thinks it’s medically necessary

Why should you consider travel insurance that covers medical expenses related to accidents?

Even with careful trip planning, accidents can happen. Road accidents are one of the more common travel risks to be aware of when exploring destinations abroad.. Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention* shows that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of non-natural deaths for US citizens traveling internationally. However, other accidents can happen too -- like getting cut on coral while scuba diving in Australia or breaking a leg while skiing in Japan.

In those instances, you may need to get emergency medical care while you’re overseas. Your World Nomads plan may provide coverage if you have an accident during your travels, including medical treatment, hospital stays, ambulance rides, and more. If you’re hurt in a remote location and there’s not adequate treatment in your immediate area, you may be transported to the nearest suitable medical facility where treatment is available. If it is deemed medically necessary that you should go back to the US, you may be covered for the costs to get back for treatment. You must be pre-approved for these benefits by calling the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team. Terms and conditions apply.

Travel Safety Tips we recommend: Checklist of Things to Do Before Traveling Abroad

  • Research your destination. Check out the US government’s safety warnings* for your destination before traveling. You can see if good medical care is widely available in the locations where you’ll be traveling.
  • Sign up for portable health records. This is one of the non-insurance services included when you purchase a World Nomads plan with travel insurance benefits for accidents that may happen on your trip. This is a secure solution that allows you to have immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world. If you’re traveling and have an accident, it’s helpful for your medical team to know about important things such as your prescriptions, allergies, and medical conditions.
  • Check vaccination requirements before you go. Your World Nomads plan includes another additional service that gives you pre-trip medical support. A team of US-licensed physicians can prescribe you vaccinations and medication that you may need for the destinations where you’ll be traveling.
  • Make sure all of your activities are covered by your travel protection plan. World Nomads Travel Insurance plans include 250+ adventure sports and activities, but coverage varies by plan. Make sure the plan you’ve chosen covers all of the activities you’ll be participating in. Some adventure sports are excluded or have special conditions, so check the list of covered adventure sports and refer to the certificate/policy for complete details. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact us and ask.
  • Take along a first-aid kit. It’s always a good idea to be prepared, just in case something unexpected happens during your travels. Although you can buy pre-made kits, you can also put together your own travel safety kit that includes things such as band-aids, antibacterial wipes, and blister cream.
  • Have travel protection information easily accessible. Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team in your phone, as well as the travel protection plan you purchased. In remote areas, you may not have cell service or electricity to charge your phone, so it’s not a bad idea to have a copy of this printed as well. You don’t want to be searching for that information if you have an accident while traveling.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for travel accidents. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What should I do if I have an accident while on my trip?

If you have an accident while traveling, contact local authorities to receive immediate assistance. If you’ve purchased a World Nomads Travel Insurance plan that includes benefits for accidents, contact the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

You’ll want to have this information handy when you call:

    • Your plan number
    • A contact number where you can be reached
    • A brief description of your situation
    • Your location

Just make sure you save all receipts and documentation of your accident. You’ll need that if you plan to make a claim for accident travel insurance benefits.
