Learn how travel insurance can help on your trip to Nicaragua.

Whether you’re traveling to Nicaragua for the nature, nightlife, history or beaches, it’s important to consider getting a quote for travel insurance* for the unexpected things that may happen during your travels.
You can explore the ruins of Leon Viejo – one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas, or maybe you’ll be lucky enough to spot toucans while hiking at Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve. However, nobody wants to think about things like canceled trips, delayed baggage and medical emergencies, but those are all possibilities too. You can never be too prepared; we encourage you to check out our tips on things to know before traveling to Nicaragua.
You booked the flights to Managua and even pre-booked a private tour of the Masaya Volcano. You’ve taken the steps to plan an awesome vacation, but there’s some things you just can’t plan for.
Hiking through Miraflor’s cloud forest is an amazing experience - unless you get hurt and need to see a doctor.
There’s also a possibility that natural disasters can affect your travels. What happens if an earthquake disrupts your travel plans? You may then wish you had travel insurance for Nicaragua.
There are four different plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.
World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Americans traveling to Nicaragua - including surfing and hiking. Scuba diving among the spectacular corals around the Corn Islands and kayaking through the mangroves of Isla Juan Vanado may be covered too.
While there’s so many adventures that may be covered, you’ll want to think about the activities you’ll be doing while you’re there. Not all activities are covered under every plan, so it’s a good idea to know your general travel itinerary before you get a quote. Some activities will require an extra level of coverage, depending on the risk involved.
If you’re participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your plan wording, you can contact us to determine if you will be covered.
In Nicaragua, the healthcare system may not be what you are familiar with back home. In small clinics, you may have to pay before being seen by a medical professional. You can protect yourself from loss due emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Nicaragua.
Before your trip, you may want to make an appointment with Runway Health-- an online travel clinic and our non-insurance service partner. The telehealth service offers online consultations 24/7 and can help you obtain any necessary prescriptions such as medication for traveler’s diarrhea or motion sickness.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.
If your medical team and the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team think it’s best for you to travel back home to the US for treatment, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Nicaragua may cover the costs to get you there.
Even if you’ve planned the perfect getaway to Nicaragua, sometimes things happen that can cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.
Nicaragua has multiple active volcanoes such as Concepcion and San Cristobal. They can be so fascinating to see, but they aren’t as cool when they mess up your travel plans. If your flight is canceled because of a volcanic ash cloud and you can no longer get to your destination, your travel insurance for Nicaragua may help you be reimbursed for non-refundable tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance.
Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and it gets interrupted. For example, you may need to go back to the US early if an immediate family member back home has an expected medical emergency or dies.
Make sure to keep all documentation and receipts for things you paid for in advance - you’ll need those if you make a claim.
What happens if you check your bags in at your home airport, and then realize you made it to Managua but your bags didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.
If the airline can’t track your bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, a non-insurance service that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags.
If someone stole your bags in Nicaragua, the first step is to file a police report. Then, give the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team a call. You may be reimbursed for your stolen bags and personal belongings, minus depreciation and up to your plan limits. Certain qualifying factors would have to have occurred, as well. For instance, you couldn’t have left your belongings alone by the pool or have been intoxicated when the theft took place.
When you get a quote, you’ll be able to review what’s included in your travel insurance coverage for lost or stolen bags, as well as information on depreciation and policy limits.
Even with all of the friendly locals, crime is still a problem in Nicaragua. Pickpocketing is common, so be extra careful when you're in crowded areas or using public transportation. The markets are a hotspot where visitors are targeted too. Pay attention to your surroundings, avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets, and never take your hands off your bags. Leave the flashy jewelry at home.
Even when you’re being cautious, things can happen. If you’re robbed, make sure you file a police report and save a copy - you’ll need that if you have to make a claim.
Just make sure you’re doing your part to try to avoid lost and stolen items. If you overindulge on the Flora de Cana and leave your phone in a bar, we won’t be able to cover that.
Before you leave the US, check out the US government’s safety warnings for Nicaragua to review their up to date warnings on any advisories that may exist at that time.
If you purchase travel insurance for Nicaragua, it’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your policy number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
Demonstrations and civil unrest may occur and even peaceful demonstrations can become violent. Stay away from areas where these are happening - Nicaraguan law prohibits political activity by foreigners.

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.
