How travel insurance coverage could protect Americans as they adventure in Nicaragua
As featured in:
Nicaragua has so much to offer visiting Americans - whether that be nature, nightlife, history, or beaches. You can surf all day and party all night in San Juan del Sur, check out the colonial architecture in Granada, and swim among the unusual rock formations in the Somoto Canyon.
A trip to the ruins of Leon Viejo will take you to one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas, and you may even get lucky enough to spot toucans and monkeys as you hike at Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve.
There are so many adventures that await in Nicaragua, but there are also some things to be aware of. We encourage you to check out our tips on things to know before traveling to Nicaragua. You may also want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance coverage to protect you against unexpected travel hiccups.
You booked the flights to Managua and booked a private tour of the Masaya Volcano. Even if you’ve taken the steps to plan an awesome vacation, there are some things you just can’t plan for.
Nobody wants to think about things like cancelled trips, delayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly.
Hiking through Miraflor’s cloud forest is an amazing experience - unless you get hurt and need to see a doctor. There’s also a possibility that natural disasters can affect your travels. What happens if an earthquake disrupts your travel plans? You may then wish you had travel insurance for Nicaragua.
There are four different plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance coverage for your needs.
World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Americans traveling to Nicaragua - including surfing and hiking. Want to explore Nicaragua from beneath the surface? No problem! Scuba diving among the spectacular corals around the Corn Islands may be covered. Kayaking through the mangroves of Isla Juan Vanado may be covered too.
Not all activities are covered under every plan so it’s helpful to have an idea of what adventures you’ll be going on to get the most accurate quote. An advance plan will help you choose the best insurance coverage for your trip—and make sure even your most daring adventure is protected.
Before you take off on your Nicaraguan adventure, we recommend that you make an appointment with Runway Health-- an online travel clinic and our non-insurance service partner. The telehealth service offers affordable online consultations 24/7 and can help you obtain any necessary vaccinations or medications, such as medication to help with altitude sickness and traveler’s diarrhea.
Even with preparation, you can still get sick or injured though. Reliable health care can be limited in Nicaragua and standards are different than in US hospitals.
What happens if you have an accident while climbing Volcano Concepcion? With an international travel protection plan from World Nomads, you may be reimbursed for certain emergency medical expenses like an ambulance, hospital stay, or medication prescribed to treat your emergency medical condition.
If you become injured or sick during your trip, and our emergency assistance team and your treating physician recommend that you travel back home to the United States because of your medical condition, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Nicaragua may cover the costs to get you there.
If you have a medical emergency after you’ve left the US, you can call our 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. You must contact our emergency assistance team before seeking medical attention, unless your emergency medical condition prevents you from calling. If this case, you should call as soon as medically possible or have someone call on your behalf.
Even if you’ve planned the perfect getaway to Nicaragua, sometimes things happen that can cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.
Nicaragua has multiple active volcanoes such as Concepcion and San Cristobal. They are fascinating to see, but they aren’t as fun when they mess up your travel plans. If, after you have departed on your trip, you miss a connection or your flight is canceled due to inclement weather caused by a volcanic ash cloud, your travel insurance for Nicaragua could help you be reimbursed for non-refundable tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance.
Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and it gets interrupted. For example, you may need to go to the US early if an immediate family member back home has an unexpected medical emergency or dies.
The Explorer and Epic Plans also cover for various travel inconveniences you may encounter, if you purchase your plan during the time-sensitive period. Say you’re on an epic road trip and your rental car breaks down, making you late to your intended destination by 12 or more hours. Your World Nomads insurance plan for Nicaragua may reimburse you for this headache but remember to document it, as proof of the rental car break down will be required if you make a claim.
What happens if you land in Managua, but your bags don’t? If you’re left sitting at the airport carousel anxiously waiting for the bag that is more than 12 hours late, the baggage coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Nicaragua may help you be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until your bag makes its way to you.
Sometimes your bags aren’t just delayed but they never come at all. If that happens, you could be covered for the cost of replacing your belongings (up to plan limits) if the airline isn’t able to remedy the situation. You will be asked to prove that you own what you are claiming for, so be sure to save receipts and take photos.
In both cases, the first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, our non-insurance service partner that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.
Even though locals have a reputation of being friendly, crime is still a problem in Nicaragua. Pickpocketing is common, and you’ll want to be extra careful when you're in crowded areas like markets or using public transportation. Pay attention to your surroundings, avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets, and never take your hands off your bags. You’ll also want to leave the flashy jewelry at home.
Even when you’re being cautious, things can happen. If you’re robbed, make sure you file a police report and save a copy - you’ll need that if you have to make a claim.
Just make sure you’re doing your part to try to avoid lost and stolen items. If you overindulge on the Flora de Cana and leave your phone in a bar, we won’t be able to cover that.
Before you leave the United States, we encourage you to check out the US government’s safety warnings for Nicaragua to review their up to date warnings on any advisories that may exist at that time, from weather to political instability.
Demonstrations and civil unrest may occur, and even peaceful demonstrations can become violent. Stay away from areas where these are happening - Nicaraguan law prohibits political activity by foreigners.
If you purchase travel insurance for Nicaragua, it’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your policy number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
Learn a few Spanish phrases ahead of your trip, which will be helpful to navigate your way through Nicaragua. And most importantly, enjoy your adventure!

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.
