According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "Because Zika infection during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects, pregnant women should not travel to areas with risk of Zika”.

Zika virus can be spread to unborn children and has been linked to a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly. Partners of pregnant women and couples considering pregnancy should know the risks to pregnancy and take prevention steps. All travelers should strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites and to prevent sexual transmission during and after the trip.

Where is the world is Zika virus?

Specific areas with ongoing Zika virus transmission are often difficult to determine and are likely to change over time. If traveling, please visit the CDC Travelers' Health site for the most updated travel information.

What’s covered by travel insurance

Coverage for Zika virus is the same as for other sickness. You can still get coverage if you intend to visit a country with a high rate of Zika. There are no exclusions or limitations for an epidemic or pandemic. Should travelers become ill with the Zika virus, coverage may be available for Emergency Medical, Medical Evacuation, Trip Cancellation, or Trip Interruption.

Cover is subject to the conditions and exclusions in your travel insurance* plan, so please do read your plan documents carefully. If you have questions about coverage, please call the Trip Mate Customer Service Team who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Write or call:
