What countries are covered by World Nomads travel insurance?

We offer travel insurance to most countries in the world; however, war or sanctions may affect coverage available to a destination or region.

How do I know if the country I want to visit is covered?

When you get a quote, you’ll select the country or countries you plan to visit. If you try to add a country that we don’t cover (e.g. Cuba, North Korea, Sudan), the system won’t let you continue with the quote. It’s important to choose all the countries or regions you plan to travel to when you buy your policy.

If you choose certain regions like ‘Asia’ or ‘Worldwide’, rather than individual countries, please note there may be some countries excluded from coverage.

Travel insurance tip 1: if you’re not sure whether the country you want to travel to is covered, contact us.

What about cover for activities in remote areas?

Whilst we offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports, and adventures, there are some activities that we don’t cover on any of our policies. We don’t offer cover for:

  • free mountaineering, climbing in remote or inaccessible regions,
  • exploratory expeditions and new routes,
  • high altitude climbing over 6,000 meters,
  • mountaineering expeditions or,
  • activities within Antarctica, the Arctic Circle or Greenland.

How sanctions affect travel insurance coverage

If a country is sanctioned by the U.S. government, we are not able to offer coverage if you travel there. This means we cannot offer emergency evacuation or medical assistance in those countries. We also cannot pay any claims for events that may occur while you are there or that are related to your travel there.

Pay attention to travel warnings from the US Department of State

If the U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for a country you’re planning to visit, you should be aware that it may affect your cover, especially if you intend to make a claim.

With this in mind, we won’t offer cover for costs that directly or indirectly relate to or arise from you traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government warning of ‘Do Not Travel’ issued by the U.S. Department of State. You should also expect to pay out of pocket for any expenses, and then claim for your costs once you’re back in your country of residence, if you are covered under our policies.

Travel insurance tip 2: government warnings can be issued or changed without notice at any time, so always check the status with the U.S. State Department before you buy a policy and before you pay anything towards your trip, either deposits or the full amount.

What if I get Covid-19 while traveling?

Both our Standard and Explorer Plans offer emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Coronavirus (COVID-19) overseas. Cover available includes medical assistance, hospitalization benefits, and evacuation or repatriation, if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

Only our Explorer Plan also includes our Coronavirus Travel Costs benefit, which offers cover for some coronavirus-related events, such as:

  • trip cancellation should you contract COVID-19 and be placed under quarantine;
  • for healthcare workers, residential care workers, or law enforcement officers having pre-approved leave canceled due to COVID-19; or
  • where you are denied boarding because you’re suspected of being infected with Covid-19.

Note: benefit limits may vary depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you have chosen.

What isn’t covered

We don’t cover trips to dangerous places. For example, you may invalidate your travel insurance if you decide to go anywhere with:

  • Hostilities, whether a war has been declared or not. This can include acts of a foreign enemy or acts of terrorists; insurrection; martial law; blockade; or discharge, explosion or use of a weapon of mass destruction.
  • Nuclear reactions or radioactive fallout.
  • Failure to observe applicable preventative measures for the travel region(s), as outlined by the World Health Organization, including obtaining relevant vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, and hygiene measures. Please refer to who.int for further information.
  • A 'Do Not Travel' advisory from the US Department of State, even if the applicable country is listed as a travel destination on your Certificate of Insurance. If the relevant government issues a 'Do Not Travel' advisory after you buy your policy, travelers with the Explorer Plan may be eligible for cover for related pre-trip cancellation, trip interruption and additional expenses.
