Overseas medical travel insurance: At a glance

Food poisoning definitely isn’t on the menu for most of our travelers, but then again neither is Coronavirus (COVID-19), scooter accidents, brain aneurysms or shark bites.

We’ve seen all of these and more in our claims department at World Nomads and that’s why we think you’d have to be mad to travel anywhere overseas without travel insurance for overseas medical emergencies.

What to do if you’re injured overseas

Contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team who can help you sort out the insurance side of things. Finally, make sure that you keep all receipts and reports from your treating doctor, including the diagnosis and treatment notes and any other documents.

  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance support

What’s not covered?

  • Alcohol misuse or being under the influence of a drug.

Travel tips for medical emergencies overseas

  • Save your policy number and the Emergency Assistance number on your phone before you travel.
  • Keep a printed copy of policy documents.
  • Know local emergency numbers.
  • Don’t ‘wait it out’ if you’re unwell. Seek treatment early and contact our team as soon as practical.
  • Keep copies of all medical paperwork.

If you’re injured or have an illness that we believe is best treated at home, we may make the decision to repatriate you even if you don’t want to go. You must be aware that if you choose not to go, against our advice, then way may limit the costs we pay, and you’ll then be responsible for any ongoing or additional costs relating to or arising from the event or from the medical condition for which you’re claiming.

Travel insurance tip: Emergency numbers vary by country. Look them up before you travel and keep them handy.
