Can Travel Insurance Help With a Lost or Stolen Passport?

If you’ve somehow lost your passport while overseas don’t panic. You can make a claim for the expenses you’ll have to replace your passport if it’s stolen, lost or damaged under specific circumstances.

What’s covered

The costs to replace your passport including:

  • The replacement costs of any temporary passport/travel document that was issued in your original passport.
  • Any official passport processing fees which are over and above what you would normally pay at home.
  • Any reasonable and necessary additional travel and accommodation expenses you incur during your trip to replace lost or stolen travel documents overseas.

Your passport is covered when:

  • Stolen while you were carrying it (when the theft is observed)
  • Stolen from a locked safety box or locker where there are visible signs of forced entry.
  • Stolen from your locked accommodation abroad
  • Lost or damaged by fire or other natural disaster if locked in your accommodation abroad or in a locked safety box.

Delayed returning home due to a stolen passport?

If you're about to embark on the last leg of your trip to come home and  your passport is stolen and you have to replace it before you can travel, your policy will be extended up to a maximum of 30 consecutive days beyond your end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

You must notify the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team of your delay as soon as possible. If the event is not covered under the policywe will inform you..

What you need to do if your passport is stolen or lost:

Report the theft or loss to your passport to:

  • The nearest police authority within 24 hours of the discovery and obtain a written police report.
  • Your nearest embassy, consulate or government office so you can apply for your replacement passport. You must provide us with copies of all documents provided by the government agency. Contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team if you need help locating any of these offices.

When making a claim for your lost or stolen passport, you must provide the written police report and receipts for all costs incurred to support your claim.

Any claim submitted related to the theft, loss or damage to your passport will have a USD$100 policy excess deducted per person, per claimable event.

What’s not covered

There’s no cover for:

  • Costs related to the time involved in replacing your passport
  • Stolen passports if left unsupervised or if you don’t take reasonable care to protect it.
  • Any other reason listed under the General Exclusions in your policy wording.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it.
