Why should you consider travel insurance that covers pets?

Your pets are a part of your family, too. Whether your cat or dog is travelling the world with you, or staying behind at a kennel, it’s important to make sure they’re protected for unexpected travel situations as well. What happens if your dog gets bitten by a snake on a hike and has to go to the vet? Emergency vet visits aren’t cheap, and you likely haven’t included those costs in your travel budget.

Unexpected costs can pop up for pets staying at a kennel also. If your return trip home is unexpectedly delayed, you may have to call your pet boarding facility and extend your pet’s stay. In addition to the stress of being away from your pet for even longer, that extended pet boarding may also cost you additional money that you hadn’t budgeted for.

World Nomads offers travel insurance plans for Canadian residents that may include additional benefits for pets. You may be reimbursed for expenses if your cat or dog has to stay at the licensed commercial kennel for longer than expected because of a covered delay, or if they are travelling with you and need emergency veterinary services (up to maximum plan limits shown in your policy documents).

Tips for Getting Your Pet Ready for the Kennel

80% of households in Canada have at least one pet. Us Canadians love our furbabies, but we also love travelling. Sometimes we’re able to take them on vacation, but not all trips are as conducive to bringing our four-legged family members along. In those instances, pet parents often turn to boarding kennels to care for their pets while they’re away. Many kennels offer posh stays that include rooms with televisions, swimming pools, and even cameras so you can check in on them while you’re travelling.

There are a few things you can do to help make sure your pet has a good stay at the kennel while you’re away. Preparing ahead of time also causes less worry for you while you’re travelling, allowing you to fully relax during your vacation.

  • Schedule a walk-through at the kennel. When choosing a kennel, visit ahead of time to meet the staff, make sure it’s clean, and learn more about their daily routines.
  • Get up-to-date on all vaccinations and treatments. Ask the boarding facility what vaccinations are required. Talk to your veterinarian also, as they may recommend other treatments such as flea and tick prevention if your pet is staying at a kennel.
  • Have printed proof of vaccinations. Make sure you have copies of these to provide to the kennel so there are no issues when you drop your pet off. Many like to have these on file.
  • Pack food from home. Keep your pets on their normal routine and prevent tummy issues by bringing their usual food. To prevent any under or overfeeding, pre-portion their food in advance. Bring extra also in case your return is delayed.
  • Leave clear instructions with their medications. Include notes about the dosage and timing. Send extra meds along too, just in case.
  • Bring along something that reminds them of home. Anything that has a scent from home, like a small blanket or a t-shirt, can help ease the minds of pets who may be nervous when going to the kennel.
  • Don’t forget litter for your kitties. If the kennel allows you to bring your own litter, do it. Cats may be more accepting of the type of litter that they’re accustomed to using at home.
  • Leave contact information. Make sure the kennel has the correct contact information to reach you while you’re travelling. Also provide them with the name and number of your veterinarian so that’s on file as well.
  • Consider travel insurance for pet kenneling. Before your trip, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance that includes benefits for extended pet kenneling fees. Travel delays are often out of your control, and this benefit may help reimburse you for the extra time your cat or dog has to stay at the kennel because of a covered delay (up to maximum limits as shown in your policy documents.)
  • Save all of your receipts and documentation. If you need to make a claim, you must have documentation from the kennel showing the original and actual pick-up dates. Make sure you keep all written confirmations and receipts for the expenses incurred, as well as written confirmation for the reason for the delay home from the common carrier.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for pet kenneling. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can my pet bird, fish, turtle, or pig be covered?
Only domesticated cats and dogs that live with you in your primary residence as companions may be covered under the pet travel insurance benefits included in the Explorer, Epic, and Annual Multi-Trip plans from World Nomads. While we love your birds, fish, turtles, and even your pet pig, unfortunately they aren’t covered.
  • Which travel insurance plan covers pets?

World Nomads has four travel insurance plans for Canadian residents – three single-trip plans and an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan. All of the plans may include travel insurance for pets except the Standard Plan, which is the most basic plan. If you want to have pet kennelling and emergency veterinary service benefits included in your travel insurance plan, you’ll want to select from the Explorer, Epic, or Annual Multi-Trip Plans. When you get a quote for travel insurance, you can compare the maximum benefit limits for each plan and choose the plan that offers the level of coverage that you and your pet need.

  • How much does pet travel insurance cost?

When you get a quote for travel insurance for pet kennelling and emergency veterinary coverage, you’ll input information about your trip, including the destination and dates. It just takes a few minutes and you’ll then be shown the prices for the different single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance plans. At that point, you can choose the best travel insurance plan for you and your pet’s needs. Please note that travel insurance benefits for pets are not included in the Standard plan.

  • What do I do if my pet gets hurt while we’re on vacation?

If your cat or dog is travelling with you outside of your home province and has an accidental bodily injury, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team immediately. We will need to pre-authorize treatment if you plan to make a claim. You can then seek emergency veterinary treatment. If you purchased the Explorer, Epic, or Annual Multi-Trip plan offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, you may be reimbursed for the fees you pay for treatment (up to the maximum benefit amount shown in your policy documents).
