Why should I consider buying domestic travel insurance for trips within Canada?

Maybe your next trip won’t include crossing an ocean or boarding a plane. But just because you’re travelling within Canada doesn’t mean that unexpected situations can’t happen. World Nomads offers single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents, and coverage starts when you leave your home province. Sometimes situations like sickness, job loss, and natural disasters can disrupt your trip. As if that’s not bad enough, it’s worse when you lose the money that you already paid for your trip. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for your prepaid, unused, non-refundable expenses such as hotel accommodations and tours.

If you get injured while skiing in Whistler or hiking in Banff National Park, your Government Health Insurance Plan may not cover all expenses. Full GHIP benefits typically stop as soon as you leave your province. Domestic travel insurance may include emergency medical coverage that covers expenses such as ambulance transportation, prescription medications and more. Lost, stolen, and delayed bags may also be covered, and some plans offer additional benefits, such as travel insurance coverage for pets and rental cars (up to the maximum limits as shown in your policy documents).

Exclusions

  • Pre-existing conditions, as outlined in your policy documents
  • Injuries or sickness related to drug or alcohol use
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return to your home province
  • Expenses that are fully covered by your Government Health Insurance Plan or another party
  • Participation in activities not listed as covered in your policy documents
  • Travel within your home province
  • Situations outside of the limits, terms, and conditions of coverage stated in your policy documents

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for non-insurance services. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve already left home?

Yes. With World Nomads, you may be able to buy a travel insurance plan even after your trip has started. As long as you have an internet connection, you can get a quote and purchase coverage online. If you buy a World Nomads plan while travelling, waiting periods and conditions may apply. There is a 48-hour waiting period before you have emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness. Also, after an event has occurred, like a natural disaster, you can’t be covered for that specific event.

  • Am I required to have a GHIP if I am travelling?
You must have Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) coverage in your home province for your entire trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefit. If you don't, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to $40,000.
  • Does domestic travel insurance include rental car protection?

Rental car insurance benefits are only included on the Explorer, Epic, and Annual Multi-Trip plans for Canadian residents. You may be reimbursed for the cost of repairing a rental car, or replacing it, if it gets seriously damaged. You may also be reimbursed for roadside assistance charges if your rental car breaks down (up to maximum benefits shown in your policy documents). If you have questions about what may be covered, contact us and ask.
