Travel insurance may cover your trips within Canada that are outside of your home province

Maybe your next trip won’t include crossing an ocean or boarding a plane. But just because you’re travelling within Canada doesn’t mean that unexpected situations can’t happen. World Nomads offers single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents, and coverage starts when you leave your home province. Sometimes situations like sickness, job loss, and natural disasters can disrupt your trip. As if that’s not bad enough, it’s worse when you lose the money that you already paid for your trip. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for your prepaid, unused, non-refundable expenses such as hotel accommodations and tours.
If you get injured while skiing in Whistler or hiking in Banff National Park, your Government Health Insurance Plan may not cover all expenses. Full GHIP benefits typically stop as soon as you leave your province. Domestic travel insurance may include emergency medical coverage that covers expenses such as ambulance transportation, prescription medications and more. Lost, stolen, and delayed bags may also be covered, and some plans offer additional benefits, such as travel insurance coverage for pets and rental cars (up to the maximum limits as shown in your policy documents).

Hopefully, your trip will go smoothly and won’t need to use your travel insurance benefits. But if your trip takes a turn for the worse and you experience a covered, unplanned circumstance, you’ll need to contact us as soon as possible and provide certain information that may include:
You can then file a claim online. Depending on the reason for your claim, you’ll need to provide required documentation that may include:
We Canadians love exploring within our country. Data from the Canadian Government shows that domestic trips are on the rise – by double digits, in some cases. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next trip, here are a few ideas from our nomads who’ve explored Canada and experienced some really cool things along the way.
Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for non-insurance services. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.
Yes. With World Nomads, you may be able to buy a travel insurance plan even after your trip has started. As long as you have an internet connection, you can get a quote and purchase coverage online. If you buy a World Nomads plan while travelling, waiting periods and conditions may apply. There is a 48-hour waiting period before you have emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness. Also, after an event has occurred, like a natural disaster, you can’t be covered for that specific event.
We suggest that you check the coverage in your Government Health Insurance Plan, as it could be limited when you travel outside of your province, and may only pay a small portion, if any, of your medical expenses. Also consider the amount of money you spent on your trip. When you get a quote for domestic travel insurance that covers trips within Canada, it will include benefits that may help with emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, trip delay, baggage that is lost, stolen or delayed, and more (up to maximum limits as shown in your policy documents).
The Explorer, Epic, and Annual Multi-Trip plans have additional travel insurance benefits for your cats and dogs. Emergency veterinary costs may be included for cats and dogs that are travelling with you (up to maximum plan limits shown in your policy). An additional benefit may also be included for cats and dogs that aren’t travelling with you, and you may be reimbursed for the additional expense you have to pay a kennel if a covered trip delay causes your pet to stay longer (up to maximum plan limits shown in your policy).
Rental car insurance benefits are only included on the Explorer, Epic, and Annual Multi-Trip plans for Canadian residents. You may be reimbursed for the cost of repairing a rental car, or replacing it, if it gets seriously damaged. You may also be reimbursed for roadside assistance charges if your rental car breaks down (up to maximum benefits shown in your policy documents). If you have questions about what may be covered, contact us and ask.
