How Does World Nomads Trip Interruption Coverage Work?

What’s covered under a World Nomads plan?

Sometimes during your trip, something unexpected happens that makes you change your itinerary or warrants your return home. Under the Trip Interruption benefit, you could get reimbursed for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel costs if you need to shorten your travels for a covered reason, up to the maximum amount specified in your policy. You could also be covered for additional transportation expenses, such as change fees charged by the airline or airfare to get you home.

What are the covered reasons for Trip Interruption?

Covered reasons for Trip Interruption could include:

  • You or your travel companion develops a medical condition (as certified by a physician) such as being injured in an accident or contracting an unexpected illness which prohibits you from continuing your trip.
  • The death of you, your travel companion or an immediate family member.
  • An unannounced strike that causes complete cessation of travel services at your departure or destination.
  • Your principal residence is made uninhabitable due to natural disaster.
  • You miss your connecting flight due to a weather-related delay of three hours or more.

Read the Trip Interruption section of your policy for more details.

What if my flight is overbooked or cancelled due to staffing issues?

Our policies don’t cover you in the event you can’t board your flight or you have been ‘bumped’ to another flight because it’s been overbooked. We also do not cover flight cancellations or delays due to airline or airport staffing issues.

If you choose to purchase another flight with a different airline, be aware that your original airline carrier may not cover for these additional expenses.

In these cases, you should:

  • First talk to your airline carrier about getting a new flight booked - either on another flight or with another airline.
  • If you have to stay overnight, speak to your airline carrier about accommodation and meal vouchers – most airlines will have options available for you.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Canadian Transportation Agency’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations. These regulations apply to all flights to, from and within Canada.

Things not covered by Trip Interruption insurance

Travel insurance doesn’t cover every circumstance or loss. In addition to the general exclusions of the policy, when it comes to Trip Interruption there are additional exclusions that apply. The following are some examples of circumstances that will not be covered:

  • Any circumstances that you have knowledge of at the time of booking your trip or purchasing your policy that might cause your trip to be interrupted. This might include such things as medical conditions, defer travel advisories, announced strikes and natural disasters.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that have not been stable and controlled in the 90-day period immediately preceding your trip departure date.
  • Travel documents, including passports and visas, not arriving in time for your trip.
  • Transportation expenses to return you to your home province, if you did not have a return ticket purchased prior to your policy effective date.

For a list of the exclusions specific to trip interruption coverage, please refer to the policy wording. Additional general exclusions also apply. Read your policy for full details.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.
