How can travel insurance help with my stolen passport and other important documents?

Losing your Canadian passport is never a pleasant experience, especially if someone took it. If your passport has been stolen, World Nomads travel insurance may be able to help.

What does your coverage offer?

World Nomads travel insurance plans have coverage for theft or damage of the following documents:

  • Passports
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Birth certificates
  • Travel visas

You can claim up to the maximum limit stated in the policy towards the replacement of your passport or one or more other travel documents mentioned above.

Read your policy for more details. Passport coverage falls under the “Baggage, Personal Effects and Sporting Equipment” section.

What to do if your passport has been stolen

Remember to stay calm! Getting a passport stolen is awful, but you wouldn’t be the first person it’s ever happened to while travelling. Embassies and government agencies often have established methods of dealing with stolen passports, and the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is also here to help.

  1. Report the theft of your passport to the police or local authorities and get a written report.
  2. If it was stolen while at a hotel, during transportation (airline, bus, train, etc.) or on a guided tour, you will need to obtain a written report from the manager or person on duty.
  3. Contact the closest Government of Canada office abroad to sort out an emergency passport. If you need help locating one, call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance You can also visit the Canadian Government’s website for contact information for Canadian embassies and consulates abroad and other information on how to get help.
  4. Remember, if you are issued a replacement passport, keep receipts and documentation provided to you by the government and any other agencies.
  5. Keep in mind that getting a new passport can take time; you will be at the mercy of the Government of Canada’s schedule. You may need to alter your travel plans as a result.

It should go without saying, but in order to make a claim, you must have done everything you could to protect your passport. You won’t be covered if you leave it behind at a restaurant, for example.

If you have questions or require assistance, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance and they can help you with the next steps. They’ll help you find the closest Government of Canada office where a new passport can be sorted out.

What may not be covered?

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything. For example, there may not be coverage if:

  • Your passport is left unsupervised in a public place.
  • You do not get a written police report as soon as possible.
  • Your passport is damaged due to wear and tear.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.

If you need help, you can call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team any time you want.
