Am I Covered if There’s a Travel Warning in Place Where I’m Going?

If you’ve just found out there’s a travel advisory or a 'defer travel' warning issued by the Canadian Government or Canadian health authority advising you not to go to a destination that’s on your itinerary, your World Nomads insurance may provide coverage such as trip cancellation.

What does your coverage offer?

If after you’ve booked your trip and purchased your travel insurance, a travel warning advising against travel is issued by the Canadian Government or Canadian health authority, for a place you intend to go, your plan may include coverage for your non-refundable pre-paid travel expenses such as flights, accommodations and tours up to the benefit limit. However, there is no coverage if the advisory is issued due to an epidemic or pandemic.

In order to be eligible for coverage:

  • The country, region or city must be specifically listed as a destination on the itinerary of the trip that you’ve insured.
  • The travel advisory or 'defer travel' notice must be issued after both Your Effective Date and the date you paid for prepaid travel arrangements.

If you are already in the region and a travel advisory is issued, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can assist you with arrangements to leave the area.

What may not be covered?

We’ve all seen movies of heroic journalists venturing into war-torn countries for that perfect story. It makes for a great film, maybe even a great sunset with all that dust in the air. But it’s a very lousy vacation. So, don’t do anything crazy because you won’t be covered if:

  • You ignore a travel warning and enter a risky destination anyway.
  • You or your travel companion already know about a reason why your trip may be cancelled or interrupted at the time of booking your trip or purchasing your insurance.

You can find out if any country you plan on visiting is affected by a travel advisory on the Canadian government website.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.
