World Nomads travel insurance potentially covers many types of sailing from short catamaran cruises to multi-day yacht adventures. You must be outside your home province in Canada or abroad for your insurance to apply.
Sailing is a great way to explore and travel which is why our plans provide coverage for certain sailing activities as well as the option to upgrade for more adventurous sailing adventures. These include:
Coverage for sailing on inland or coastal waters is included in both the Standard and Explorer Plans
You can upgrade your plan to include sailing activities outside coastal waters, including crewing a vessel, but only if these activities are less than 60 miles (52 nautical miles) from a safe haven.
Normal conditions and exclusions apply and if you’re not sure if your planned activity is covered, please see our activities page or contact us before you purchase your plan.
If you become seriously ill or injured while sailing and need urgent medical assistance, World Nomads may cover:
Emergency evacuation if it’s urgent and medically necessary (by the most appropriate means including helicopter when necessary and available)
Emergency medical expenses for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical centre
Repatriation if you’re seriously ill or injured, unable to continue your trip and pre-approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance.
You must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team before getting medical attention.
World Nomad’s insurance for sailing is specifically designed to target medical expenses, so if you’re renting a boat and worried about scratches and dents to the vessel, you should explore options with the rental company.
In addition to the above, the following is not covered under the policy:
Liability coverage while sailing
Activities more than 60 miles (52 nautical miles) from a safe haven (a protected body of water used by marine craft for refuge from storms or heavy seas)
Any type of racing or professional sailing sports
A loss arising from your willfully exposing yourself to needless risk
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.
Otherwise, enjoy the water and stay safe!
