Your travel insurance policy provides coverage for emergency medical expenses if you suffer an unexpected illness or injury during your travels.
Depending on your situation, coverage for emergency medical expenses may include:
Physician care
Hospital stays
Wheelchairs, crutches, braces or other medical appliances
Prescription medication
Ambulance or local taxi fares
Emergency evacuation and repatriation
Return home of dependent children under your care
If you’re travelling alone and hospitalized for more than three days, World Nomads can also potentially help fly a companion to your bedside to be with you. This would include reimbursement cost towards accommodation and food for them as well.
Check the Schedule of Benefits for your policy’s maximum limits. To be eligible for full coverage, you must be covered under a Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the entire duration of your policy.
Remember, travel insurance is made for emergency medical and dental treatment outside of your home province. It’s for unexpected illnesses or injuries, not general check-ups.
You must not know of any reason why you will need to seek medical or dental attention before purchasing your policy start date
If you purchase your plan after departing your home province, coverage will take 48 hours to kick in
Pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy may affect your claim
Routine care, vaccinations and other preventative treatment are excluded
Any ongoing medical expenses, once you’ve returned to your home province, are not covered
Any medical expenses incurred if you refuse to be transferred home after being declared able are also an exclusion
You must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance immediately before seeking any medical attention, evacuation or repatriation. The medical department needs to pre-approve surgery and other procedures except in the case of a life-threatening emergency.
If your medical condition prevents you from calling right away or you've been taken to the hospital already, then you (or someone else) must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team as soon as reasonably possible. If you don't let us know, your coverage may be affected.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.
