Am I Covered by Travel Insurance in Case of a Hurricane, Cyclone or Monsoon?

Yes, there's cover for hurricanes!

It goes without saying that you need to have purchased your policy before these wily whirling dervishes of destruction become a known natural disaster and have a name. So, if you’ve done that, we’ll do everything we can to help you.

Here are the coverages in the plan for Canadian residents:

  • If a natural disaster such as a named hurricane makes your Canadian principal home residence – the place where you live at least half the year – uninhabitable, you may need to cancel your trip. Let us know about the cancellation within 48 hours, then when you’re ready, you can make a claim to seek reimbursement for your unused, prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses. Your policy may also provide trip cancellation cover if you are unable to occupy your destination residence due to a natural disaster or unintentional act.
  • Likewise, if while you’re on vacation, a natural disaster has caused extensive damage your principal residence back in Canada, you’ll probably need to get back to Canada quickly. Our Emergency Assistance team can help you get flights back home as soon as possible. You may be eligible for coverage under the trip interruption section of the policy for your prepaid, non-refundable, unused trip arrangements and for expenses you incur to return home early.
  • If while you are on your trip, your regularly scheduled flight is delayed for three or more hours or cancelled due to inclement weather, the policy provides coverage for unused prepaid, nonrefundable expenses and new transportation expenses (up to the unused trip cost value) to get back to your home province.
  • If the Canadian Government or Heath Canada issues a “defer travel” recommendation advising travelers not to go to your destination, there’s coverage for your unused trip arrangements, plus additional reasonable expenses to either get you back home to Canada or to the next destination on your itinerary. The recommendation or written formal warning must be issued after the effective date of your policy.

What’s not covered:

  • Non-medical emergency evacuation
  • When a defer travel recommendation is issued before your purchase your travel insurance or book your trip.
  • Transportation expenses to return you to your home province if prior to your effective date you did not purchase a return air ticket to return to your home province as part of your trip

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

When you’re ready, you can get a quote and compare the coverages in our Standard and Explorer plans side-by side. And please reach out if you have any questions – we’re happy to help.
