Expecting a new baby? Learn why you may want to consider travel insurance that may cover pregnancy complications
As featured in:
Did you book your dream vacation and then find out that you’re pregnant a week later? Or do you just need a little babymoon to have some relaxing time before your little one arrives? Either way, many women travel with confidence while pregnant, and you can too. We recommend you consult your doctor first just to make sure it’s safe for you to travel and then start thinking about the ‘what ifs’. As unexpected medical events can disrupt travel plans anytime, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel protection which includes insurance benefits and non-insurance services that may cover pregnancy complications.
So what is a pregnancy complication? It’s important to know how World Nomads Travel Insurance plans define it. The following wording is directly from the plan document:
Complications of Pregnancy means conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These conditions include hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, and missed abortion. Complications of pregnancy also include non-elective cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy which is terminated and spontaneous termination of pregnancy, which occurs during a period of gestation in which a viable birth is not possible.
Complications of pregnancy do not include Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy (except due to conditions noted above), false labor, occasional spotting, morning sickness, elective abortion, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, not constituting a categorically distinct complication of pregnancy.

Another non-insurance service included when you purchase a World Nomads plan is access to our portable records service partner. They have a secure solution that allows you immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world. If you’re traveling and end up in the hospital because of unexpected complications related to pregnancy, you’ll want your medical team to know about your prescriptions, allergies, medical conditions, immunization and more. It’s included, but you’ll need to register once you purchase a plan that includes coverage for pregnancy complications. Taking the time to set this up could be lifesaving for you and your baby if you unexpectedly have a medical emergency while you’re pregnant and traveling.

Yes, all of the travel protection plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance include trip cancellation insurance benefits. You may be reimbursed for unused, forfeited, prepaid, non-refundable expenses that you paid for in advance if you have pregnancy complications before you travel that prevent you from traveling. You’ll need documentation from your medical team if you plan to make a claim though.
(The optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ add-on allows you to cancel for any reason not otherwise covered by the plan, but it is only available for those who purchase the Explorer or Epic plans, and it must be purchased during the time sensitive period. Available at an additional cost for U.S. residents, not available to residents of New York.
