  • The Explorer and Epic plans have additional benefits available for travelers, including coverage for pet kenneling if your trip is delayed for more than six consecutive hours while enroute to your return destination due to a covered reason. Additional terms apply.
  • You may be reimbursed for the necessary additional kennel fees or expenses you have to pay the licensed commercial kennel if your delay causes your pet to stay longer (up to maximum benefit amount)
  • Domestic cats and dogs that live with you in your primary residence may be covered

Why should I consider travel insurance for pet kenneling?

Even after an amazing getaway, by the end of your trip you’re probably ready to be home so you can see your sweet pet. The puppy kisses and kitten cuddles await, but they may have to wait a little longer if your return trip home is unexpectedly delayed. If it happens to you, you may have to call your pet boarding facility and extend your pet’s stay. In addition to the stress of being away from your pet for even longer, that extended pet boarding may also cost you additional money that you may not have budgeted for.

US residents have the ability to purchase travel protection through World Nomads that includes the pet kennel travel insurance benefit in the Explorer and Epic plans. If you have a covered trip delay claim and you’re delayed past your scheduled return date for at least 6 consecutive hours, you may be reimbursed for the additional expense you have to pay the licensed commercial kennel, whether it is a pet boarding facility or a dog hotel. Because of unanticipated delays, pet parents may want to consider getting a quote for travel protection that includes the pet kenneling/boarding travel insurance benefit.

What May Be Covered under Trip Delay

  • A delay of your common carrier (including inclement weather)
  • A traffic accident while enroute to your scheduled departure city, that you’re not directly involved in
  • A natural disaster, such as a hurricane, earthquake or fire
  • Unannounced airline strikes or mechanical breakdowns
  • Lost or stolen passports
  • Civil unrest
  • Sickness or injury

Important to Know

  • Pet kennel travel insurance benefits are only available on the Explorer and Epic travel protection plans
  • Only dogs and cats that live with you in your primary residence may be covered
  • Covered pets must be staying in a licensed commercial kennel for the entire duration of your trip
  • Delays less than six consecutive hours aren’t eligible for coverage

Tips for Getting Your Pet Ready for the Kennel

According to the American Pet Products Association, 94 million households in the United States have at least one pet*. Sometimes we’re able to take pets on vacation, but not all trips are as conducive to bringing our four-legged family members along. In those instances, pet parents often turn to commercial kennels to care for their cats and dogs while they’re away. Many kennels offer posh stays that include rooms with televisions, swimming pools, and even cameras so you can check in on them while you’re traveling.

There are a few things you can do to help make sure your pet has a good stay at the kennel while you’re away. Preparing ahead of time also causes less worry for you while you’re traveling, allowing you to fully relax during your vacation.

  • Schedule a walk-through at the kennel. When choosing a kennel, visit ahead of time to meet the staff, make sure it’s clean, and learn more about their daily routines.
  • Get up-to-date on all vaccinations and treatments. Ask the boarding facility what vaccinations are required. Talk to your veterinarian also, as they may recommend other treatments such as flea and tick prevention.
  • Pack food from home. Keep your pets on their normal routine and prevent tummy issues by bringing their usual food. To prevent any under or overfeeding, pre-portion their food in advance. Bring extra also in case your return is delayed.
  • Leave clear instructions with their medications. Include notes about the dosage and timing. Send extra meds along too, just in case.
  • Bring along something that reminds them of home. Anything that has a scent from home, like a small blanket or a t-shirt, can help ease the minds of pets who may be nervous when going to the kennel.
  • Don’t forget litter for your kitties. If the kennel allows you to bring your own litter, do it. Cats may be more accepting of the type of litter that they’re accustomed to using at home.
  • Leave contact information. Make sure the kennel has the correct contact information to reach you while you’re traveling. Also provide them with the name and number of your veterinarian so that’s on file as well.
  • Consider travel insurance for pet kenneling. Before your trip, you may want to consider getting a quote for a travel protection plan that includes pet kenneling travel insurance benefits and non-insurance services. The pet kenneling benefit is included in the Explorer and Epic plans offered by World Nomads, and you’ll be able to compare coverage side by side when you get a quote.
  • Save all of your receipts and documentation. If you need to make a claim, you must have documentation from your licensed commercial kennel showing the original and actual pick-up dates. Make sure you keep all written confirmations and receipts for the expenses incurred, as well as written confirmation for the reason for the delay home from the common carrier.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for pet kenneling. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I cancel my trip if my pet gets sick before I leave?

If you buy your Explorer or Epic plan within 7 days of the date of making your first trip deposit or payment, you can then add on the optional ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit at an additional cost. The cancel for any reason benefit allows you to cancel your trip for any reason not already covered by the plan, including a sick pet. This means you may be partially reimbursed for non-refundable, prepaid and unused payments you’ve made towards your trip. This benefit can be handy for those trips that are big investments or booked far in advance. Additional terms and conditions apply. Not available to NY residents.

  • What types of pets are covered?

Domesticated cats and dogs that live with you in your primary residence as companions may be covered under the pet kennel benefit included in the Explorer and Epic plans from World Nomads. While we love your birds, fish, turtles, and even your pet pig, unfortunately they aren’t covered.

  • How do I file a claim to be reimbursed for my pet’s additional time at the kennel?

If you have a covered trip delay claim and you’re delayed past your scheduled return date for at least 6 consecutive hours, you may be reimbursed for the additional expense you have to pay the licensed commercial kennel, whether it is a pet boarding facility or a dog hotel. You can file a claim online, but you must have documentation from your licensed commercial kennel showing the original and actual pick-up dates. Make sure you keep all written confirmations and receipts for the expenses incurred, as well as written confirmation for the reason for the delay home from the common carrier. You’ll need these documents if you plan to file a claim.
