Am I covered if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

We understand that when traveling, you or any of your traveling companions might suffer from a pre-existing medical condition - how does this affect your travel insurance?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 14 July 2021 12:00am UTC, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 14 July 2021 please see below.

We understand that when traveling, you or any of your traveling companions might suffer from a pre-existing medical condition which needs plenty of TLC. While we cannot cover any costs related to a pre-existing medical condition of you, a relative or anyone traveling with you, our plans still offer cover for many other sudden injuries, illnesses and emergencies that may arise.

Is Coronavirus a pre-existing medical condition?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is subject to the same ‘pre-existing medical condition’ definition as all other medical conditions. This definition is outlined in your Policy Wording and applies to you, your traveling party, a close relative or any other person upon whom your trip depends.

We’ll always offer you and your traveling companions the option to buy a Standard or Explorer Plan online before you take off or while you’re traveling, but please be aware that there’s no coverage for any costs arising from, or made worse by, any pre-existing medical condition (as defined).

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

If any of the below conditions exist at the time you buy your policy or extend your policy, then we’ll consider that you have a pre-existing medical condition:

  • An ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication, the symptoms of which you are aware, or that is currently being or has been investigated by a medical practitioner, dentist or a chiropractor; and/or
  • A medical or dental condition for which advice, treatment or medication has been prescribed by a medical practitioner, dentist or a chiropractor within 180 days before you purchased your policy.

Will you be traveling while pregnant? We can offer travel insurance that covers aspects of your pregnancy. Read 'Am I covered if I’m pregnant' for more information on pregnancy cover.

What’s not covered?

  • A pre-existing medical condition, as defined above, which relates to you, a member of your traveling party, your close relative or any other person upon whom your trip depends.
  • If you return home to your country of residence and get ill, are treated for a new condition or suffer an injury, it will be considered a pre-existing medical condition from the time you resume your trip.
  • Cover is excluded for any medical or dental treatment and medication in connection with the stabilization and regulation of a pre-existing medical condition.
  • Any other reason listed under the section exclusions and General Exclusions in your Policy Wording.

Excess applies: For any medical claim, you will have to pay a per-person excess for each claimable event.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
