Do I need cover if I’m making a stopover and not leaving the airport?

Air travel can often involve stopovers, especially if you’re doing a long-haul flight or flying to remote locations. If you’re transiting through a destination, it can be tempting to spend a few days exploring it to break up your travel. So, what are you covered for (and not covered for) if you remain in the airport, or if you leave the airport on longer stopovers?

I am transiting through the airport only

Our policies may cover you during a quick stopover/transit through the airport where you do not leave the airport.

When purchasing your policy, you do not have to declare the stopover country or region if you are only transiting and do not leave the airport.

I am stopping over and will leave the airport

If you want to explore the stopover destination and therefore leave the airport, you will need travel insurance for that destination if you want to be covered for unexpected events.

For stopovers that involve you leaving the airport you will need to select the country or region where you intend to stopover when you purchase your policy. If you do not select the region or country when purchasing your policy, you may not be covered in that destination should something go wrong.

What is covered during stopovers?

If you meet the qualifying conditions for cover during your stopover or transit, you will be covered under the full terms of your policy type as shown on the Certificate of Insurance (COI).

Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you have selected, World Nomads offers coverage (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency overseas medical: if you become sick or injured during your trip your policy may cover you for overseas medical expenses, and when agreed by us.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: if you need emergency transport home due to a serious illness or injury. With our coverage, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team
  • Travel delays/interruption: if your trip is interrupted due to an insured event. Depending on your country of residence and which plan you’ve selected you may be covered for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.
  • Baggage and valuables: we offer cover options if your belongings are stolen, accidentally damaged, delayed or lost. Terms and conditions apply. You’ll need official reports, supporting documentation and copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Adventure activities and sports: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences across land, sea and sky. Check before you buy that your adventure is covered and find out what policy upgrade options may be available.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer. Each policy provides different levels of coverage depending on what you need:

  • The Standard Plan covers a range of benefits and certain adventure activities, and has lower coverage limits.
  • The Explorer plan covers all the benefits of the Standard plan, with larger coverage limits, more benefits and covers more sports and activities.

What if I want to extend my stay and need extra travel insurance?

You can extend your policy before 11:59pm based on the time and date in the capital city of your country of residence on the end date shown on your COI.

If you cannot extend your policy before it expires, you can buy a new policy while travelling. This new policy will be subject to a 72 hour waiting period. Please see the Policy Wording for more information.

Cover for stopover and/or transit is subject to terms and conditions

  • We can only offer cover on stopovers or transit if you have an active policy with us – that is, we can only cover you for a loss that occurs between the travel start date and travel end date as shown on the COI.
  • If the stopover country or region is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see travel.state.gov), or if it a sanctioned country, you will not be covered in that country or region.
  • If you need to add countries or regions to your policy after purchase, you will need to take out an additional policy.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
