What am I covered for when it comes to terrorism?

If you’re hurt or killed in a terrorist attack, World Nomads travel insurance may be able to help provide emergency assistance, including emergency medical treatment.

It’s important that warnings issued by your respective foreign offices are heeded and you exercise a high degree of caution while travelling.

If you do decide to travel abroad, stay abreast of all local information regarding any potential threats – talk to locals, read the local papers and review local news websites – stay informed and you can have a safer trip.

In the event that you find yourself suddenly caught in a terrorist event, first and foremost find safety and follow the advice of local authorities. When you are able, please contact World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.

Caught up in a terrorist attack or something else?

Not all attacks are related to terrorism. For the purposes of travel insurance coverage, World Nomads considers acts of terrorism to include those that threaten or use force or violence for political, religious or ideological reasons.

Is there cover for terrorism?

If you’re unexpectedly caught up in a terrorist attack and injured, there may be cover for emergency medical treatment, as long as you didn’t chose to visit an area where there were warnings that  terrorist activity was going to occur or participate in the terrorist activity.

In these cases, we may cover emergency medical assistance. Depending on what’s happened, this may include:

  • Guidance, support and connection to consular services.
  • Medical evacuation by air or road ambulance.
  • Admission and treatment in hospital.
  • Day surgery and out-patient medical treatment.
  • Counselling services while you’re still away.
  • Repatriation home if you’re not fit to continue travelling, when pre-approved.
  • Local funeral expenses or repatriation of remains if you die.

If there’s a terrorist act where you’re staying and the US Department of State recommends evacuation, the Explorer Plan also offers cover for trip interruption and additional expenses, in certain circumstances.

Am I covered if I need to cancel or change my plans?

Unfortunately, there’s no cover. Cancellation due to change your mind to travel or acts of terrorism are not covered by the policy.

Where does cover end?

Unfortunately, we can’t cover everything. The policy has no cover:

  • If the US Department of State or other relevant authority had issued a “do not travel” advisory for that region and you went there anyway.
  • For personal items you left behind in a speedy evacuation or any baggage damaged in a terror attack.
  • For non-medical evacuation.
  • For any expenses after you’ve returned home.
  • If you participated in the terrorist activity.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

If you are unsure of whether or not you have the right cover, please contact us for help.
