Am I covered by travel insurance if I need to see a dentist?

Got a toothache and need to see a dentist? There is cover for dental treatment but with conditions, so read on to find out if you can claim your dental expenses.

World Nomads offers cover if you need to go to a dentist for emergency dental treatment to relieve sudden and acute pain to your healthy teeth while you’re travelling.

What’s covered for dental emergencies abroad?

Your policy covers dental expenses incurred for the immediate relief of sudden and acute pain to healthy, natural teeth* following:

  • an infection, or
  • a broken tooth due to an accident

*‘Healthy, natural teeth’ means they must be whole or properly restored (with fillings only) and without impairment, periodontal or other conditions.

How much you can I claim for dental issues?

Well, that depends on how many travellers are listed on your policy. Please refer to your Policy Document for further details.

What should I do if I need dental treatment coverage while travelling?

  • Call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team for advice on your dental condition or if you need directions to the nearest or most suitable dentist.
  • Go to any registered and licensed dentist for the emergency dental treatment you need and pay the dental bills yourself.
  • Make a claim online through your membership once your treatment is complete (for overseas emergency dental expenses only).

The NZD$100 policy excess applies to all dental claims, per event.

The 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can help assist if you have a dental emergency. The team can help by locating a dental facility promptly and getting you to the facility if you are in an isolated location whenever required, so you can continue enjoying your trip without major disruptions.

Traveller tip: if you’re hospitalised, or if medical or dental expenses are more than $2,000, the Emergency Assistance team will co-ordinate payments where possible. If expenses are under $2,000, you can pay these direct and make a claim. Make sure you keep originals or copies of all of your travel documents, receipts and any medical documentation if you plan to make a claim.

What’s not covered for dental issues?

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Policy Document for what is and isn’t covered.

Here are the main things that aren’t covered:

  • dental treatment which can wait until your return home
  • major dental work, such as crowns, dentures, bridges and implants
  • any dental expenses while at home
  • anything related to an existing medical condition which includes ongoing or chronic dental conditions or related conditions of which you are aware, have received treatment in the six months prior to buying your policy (or in any prenew nz vervious insurance period for extended policies), which you have had surgery for or seen a medical specialist
  • anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the Policy Document.
