Questions to Ask When Choosing a Long-Term Travel Insurance Plan for Extended Trips

Maybe you’re one of 7,500 Canadian students who travel abroad to study in the U.K., or perhaps you’ve just retired and want to travel the world. Depending on the reason for your long-term trip, there may be different things you want to consider.

World Nomads offers single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents, and when you get a quote for travel insurance, you’ll see multiple options. It may be tempting to consider the cheapest coverage option without reading the plan wording.

However, you’ll want to pick the plan that has the best travel insurance coverage for long-term trips, and offers the level of coverage you’ll need for your particular trip.

When deciding which plan is best for your trip, you might want to ask yourself:

  • How long will I be gone on my trip?

If it is over 14 days, you may want to consider the Standard, Epic, or Explorer plan. Those plans may cover trips up to 365 days. Although the Annual Multi-Trip Plan covers all of your trips outside of your home province for up to 14 days, it is limited to trips that are 14 days or less.

  • How much did I spend on my trip?

Long-term trips are usually more expensive, so look at the total you’ve invested in your vacation and then compare that to the maximum limits in the plans. If you spent a lot of money on your trip, you may want to consider the plans that have the highest maximum limits of coverage – the Explorer and Epic plans.

  • What kind of activities will I be doing while I’m travelling?

Level 1 activities are covered automatically as long as you list them when buying, but if you’ll be participating in a Level 2 or Level 3 activity, you’ll need to upgrade your plan and pay the additional premium.

  • Do I think there’s a possibility that I may decide not to go on my trip?

Trip cancellation coverage only covers certain reasons for cancellation. If you think you may change your mind, you may want to consider adding on the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ coverage.

If you have any questions about what is covered, you can contact us and ask. Our team will be happy to assist.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for long term travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Do I still need to have a Government Health Insurance Plan?
Canadians may be covered for trips lasting up to 365 days under a single-trip plan, but you must be covered by your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your trip. If you are travelling outside your home province for more than 183 days (212 for Ontario and Newfoundland residents), you must get written evidence of extension from your Government Health Insurance Plan. If you do not have GHIP for the full duration of your trip, your total limit for all emergency medical benefits will be $40,000.
  • Is long-term travel insurance the same as expat or international health insurance?
No. Long-term travel insurance is designed for travellers on extended trips who still consider another country their primary residence. Long-term travel insurance may cover unexpected events only, whereas expat or international health insurance may cover more routine health issues. Expat or international health insurance is for those relocating abroad permanently or for an extended period of residency. If you’re unsure which suits you, check your travel plans and duration before purchasing.
  • Can I buy long-term travel insurance after I’ve already left home?

Yes! With World Nomads, you may be able to buy a long-term travel insurance plan even after your trip has started. As long as you have an internet connection, you can get a quote and purchase coverage. If you buy a World Nomads plan while travelling, waiting periods and conditions may apply. There is a 48-hour waiting period before you have emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness. Also, after an event has occurred, like a natural disaster, you can’t be covered for that specific event. New events may still be covered, but if you’ve bought your policy after a storm is named we won’t be able to cover you for losses related to that storm.

  • Which travel insurance plan should I get if I’m going on a long trip?

All of the single trip plans offered by World Nomads may cover long-term trips that are up to 365 days in length. If you’re taking a trip that is more than two weeks long, you’ll want to consider the Standard, Explorer, or Epic plan. The annual multi-trip plan covers more trips (including all trips outside of your home province in a 365-day period), but it doesn’t cover trips that are over 14 days.

When you get a quote, you’ll be able to compare the coverage and maximum limits of each plan side by side. We encourage you to think about all of the activities you’ll be participating in, as well as how much you’ve spent on your trip. If you have any questions about anything, reach out to our team and they’ll be happy to assist.
