Travel insurance impact – Canadian government advises against non-essential travel to certain areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

As of July 29, 2019 World Nomads is unable to provide insurance coverage for any travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

This follows the updated advisory issued by the Canadian Government which cautions against all travel to:

The eastern and northeastern areas of the DRC, in particular, the provinces of Maniema; North Kivu; South Kivu; Tanganyika; Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele, and Ituri; the points of entry to Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda; and areas bordering South Sudan and Uganda
The KasaÏ provinces (KasaÏ, KasaÏ-Central, KasaÏ-Oriental) because of clashes between security forces and armed militias.

The reasons for the advisory include safety and the World Health Organization’s July 17, 2019 declaration of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in the DRC as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, following a resurgence and spread of the disease.

What if I’m booked to travel to the DRC?

World Nomads will not provide coverage for travellers to any of the areas designated “Do Not Travel” or “Avoid Non-Essential Travel” by the Canadian Government. This includes trip cancellation, medical and baggage coverage.

If you have a trip planned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are concerned about your travel arrangements, please contact your carrier or tour operator first to confirm your arrangements.
