You’ve been buzzing about your trip to Bali for weeks. Cozzies and sunscreen are packed, and your boarding pass is in-hand. But just as you’re about to board, your flight is delayed because there’s a volcanic ash cloud shrouding the island. While trip delays like these are a buzz kill, travel insurance with World Nomads can help ease the stress.

Does World Nomads cover trip delays?

Whether it’s your flight or your cruise, there’s more than one way to be caught off guard by a trip delay when you’re on holiday. That’s why we offer coverage for some of the most common trip delay scenarios. Things like:

  • Weather related delays
  • Delays due to natural disaster
  • Mechanical issues with your carrier
  • Baggage delays
  • And more

A World Nomads travel insurance policy also provides access to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team, ready to help if you need to claim.

Can I claim for trip delays?

If your trip delay meets the conditions outlined in your policy, you may be able to file a claim and be reimbursed for things like:

  • Basic expenses, such as food, toiletries and accommodation, that you had to pay for because of the delay
  • Any non-refundable, pre-paid portions of your trip that you’ve had to forfeit because of the delay (such as a hotel night or a tour).

To file a claim you’ll need to:

  • Retain all documentation from your airline, transport, and/or tour provider detailing the cause and duration of the delay
  • All receipts and documentation for expenses you incur
  • And any other relevant documents for your claim

What is not covered under trip delays?

Travel protection is designed to help when your trip is affected by the unexpected, but not all delays qualify for coverage. Some examples of when you’re not covered include:

  • Delays that are less than the minimum amount of time specified in your policy
  • Delays on a return flight
  • Delays caused by expected events
  • Costs that are unnecessary or extravagant
  • Expenses that are covered by your common carrier.

It’s important to read over your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully, and always check the terms and conditions of your policy for full details what is and isn’t covered.

What’s the difference between trip delay and trip interruption?

Though they might sound similar there is a difference between the two.

A trip delay refers to a situation where your travel is delayed after it has already begun, such as being at the airport but your flight is delayed due to bad weather.

A trip interruption is an event that’s forced you to cut your trip short or miss a substantial part of your planned itinerary, like returning home early due to a medical emergency.

Both scenarios can be frustrating. World Nomads provides offers cover for both scenarios if you need help with the fallout.
