Why should you consider a travel insurance plan that covers assault?

While it’s not something anyone expects, travelers can occasionally face challenging situations, including physical or sexual assault. It’s important to know that support and resources are available should you ever need them during your trip. While some destinations have higher incidents than others, no destination is immune. If you’re assaulted and find yourself in this scary situation, the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team may help you find suitable care, communicate with doctors, report the incident to authorities, and coordinate logistics in any language and in any time zone.

Many US health insurance plans may not cover you when you’re traveling outside the country. The single trip and annual travel protection plans for US residents have benefits that may cover medical expenses that are needed to get you on the road to recovery, if an assault were to happen. You may want to consider getting a quote for a travel protection plan that includes coverage for assault.

Tips for Staying Safe While Traveling

While personal safety is important wherever you go, there are practical steps you can take to help you feel more confident and secure during your travels.

  • Travel with a buddy when available.
  • Take extra precautions when traveling at night.
  • Share your plans with a friend or loved one, especially if going to an unfamiliar area.
  • Check out the US government’s safety warnings* for your destination before traveling.
  • Pay attention to local recommendations about which areas are best to visit and which are better to avoid.
  • Keep an eye on your food and drinks. If you ever feel unsure about something you’ve eaten or drank, reach out to someone you trust or a staff member for assistance.
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, extract yourself from the situation as quickly and politely as possible.
  • Sign up for free portable health records – one of the non-insurance services included when you purchase a World Nomads plan. If you’re assaulted while traveling, it’s helpful for your medical team to know about important things such as your prescriptions, allergies, and medical conditions.
  • Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team in your phone, as well as the plan number for the travel protection plan you purchased.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for assault. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I cancel my trip if I’ve been assaulted?

World Nomads Travel Insurance offers trip cancellation and trip delay coverage for US residents in the event you or your traveling companion are the victim of a felonious assault prior to leaving for your trip. You may be reimbursed for unused, forfeited, prepaid, non-refundable expenses such as excursions, transportation and accommodations.

Remember, you must purchase your plan before an event happens that would cause you to cancel your trip. Also be sure to get both police and doctor or hospital reports before you make a claim, and reach out to our customer service team if you have any questions.

  • What do I do if I’m assaulted overseas?

If you’re injured or hospitalized as a result of an assault, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. It is also essential that you get in contact with the non-insurance 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible so that they can assess the situation according to location and local laws, and then triage accordingly.

Please be ready with the following:

    • Your plan number
    • A contact number
    • A brief description of your situation
    • Your location
  • How do I know if my destination is dangerous?

Check out the US government’s safety warnings* for your destination before traveling and do your own research by reading local newspapers or checking out online blogs from travelers in the location. You can see if your destination is high-risk, and you can also see if good medical care is widely available in the locations where you’ll be. You can also view all current advisories listed by the US Department of State.

  • How do I file a claim if I’m assaulted?

If you’re assaulted while traveling and seek medical care, you can file your claim online within 20 days after a loss occurs, or as soon as reasonably possible. You’ll need to provide documentation to back up your claim though, and the exact documentation needed will vary, depending on the care you received and the out of pocket expenses you paid. Some examples of required documents could include:

    • Discharge records of injury or illness and reports for medical and/or dental expenses claimed
    • Copies of all bills, receipts, and invoices from the provider of services
    • An incident report from the local authorities
    • An explanation of benefits from any other applicable insurance
