Am I Covered for Travel to Cuba as a US Resident?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

While US residents can currently travel to Cuba, many travel insurance companies will not cover the country, including World Nomads.

Can I buy a World Nomads insurance plan for travel to Cuba?

Due to US government restrictions, we do not have the ability to help you if you have an emergency in Cuba. Therefore, we do not sell travel insurance plans for travelers going to Cuba.

What if I have a visa that entitles me to go to Cuba as a US citizen?

Our number one priority is looking after our travelers. Unfortunately, due to increased US government sanctions on Cuba, we can no longer offer coverage for Cuba to our US travelers. If you were to get hurt there, we wouldn’t be able to assist you.

If I plan to go to Cuba anyway, what should I know about their insurance requirement?

The Cuban government requires American travelers to have a valid Cuban ‘Asistur’ medical insurance policy. The Asistur insurance policy is a Cuban-based insurance company which offers premiums for a few dollars per day. Often times, the airline will give you an option to tack this on when you purchase a flight. If you don’t have this insurance, you won’t be allowed in the country.

For further advice on travel restrictions in Cuba, refer to the US State Department.
