Am I required to buy travel insurance when visiting Cuba?

Currently, the Cuban government requires American travelers to have a valid Cuban ‘Asistur’ medical insurance policy.

The Asistur insurance policy is a Cuban-based insurance company which offers premiums for a few dollars per day. Often times, the airline will give you an option to tack this on when you purchase a flight. If you don’t have this insurance, you won’t be allowed in the country.

If you decide to go to Cuba, it is important to note that many US-based travel insurance companies will not cover this country, including World Nomads. Due to government restrictions, we do not have the ability to help you if you have an emergency in Cuba.

For further advice on travel restrictions in Cuba, refer to the U.S. State Department.
