For information relating to policies purchased prior to 14 July 2021 12:00am UTC, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 14 July 2021 please see below.

Our travel insurance offers coverage for the absolute 'worst case scenario' event that can happen to a traveler, their family or traveling companion.

This is the information you and us both hope you’ll never need to use. So, here’s what you need to know to help you or your family get through this difficult time as quickly and easily as possible.

What will travel insurance cover if a death occurs overseas?

If you die because of an accident or sudden illness, depending on your policy we will help pay for:

  • Cost of the return of your remains to your home country.
  • Local cremation and return of your ashes home in an urn, or return of your remains home for burial in your home country.
  • Any statutory arrangements (such as embalming and a zinc coffin). The policy wording doesn’t detail such costs.
  • Reasonable additional expenses for someone to return with your remains.

Most importantly our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team will be able to give support to your family back home and help them navigate the difficult administration required in getting your body back from a foreign country.

Our cover for Coronavirus-related events might assist

We understand many of our global travelers young and old are concerned about the impact Coronavirus (COVID-19) might have on their travel plans and on their health while traveling. With this in mind we’ve introduced some coverage for Coronavirus-related events on both our Standard and Explorer Plans.

The coverage offered will help travelers make decisions about booking travel now and into the future. Depending on your Country of Residence and if you buy the Standard and Explorer Plan, we may cover overseas medical expenses which include:

  • Hospitalization.
  • Prescribed medication.
  • Doctor’s visits.
  • Repatriation back home if deemed medically necessary.
  • If the worst happens, repatriation of your remains or local cremation or funeral overseas and, when necessary, costs for your next of kin to travel with your remains.

As our plans vary, check carefully the level of cover you think you might need, and purchase the right level of cover for you and your travel plans.

Please note that you need to contact our Emergency Assistance team before making any plans, regardless of whether you’re already receiving treatment and what your treating doctor says. We have a global network of medical providers and facilities. Their network has a global reach, so wherever you are, they can help guide you to local medical facilities, and help set up direct payments so you’re not out of pocket.

Our article ‘What’s Covered for Coronavirus’ explains the benefits available if you get COVID-19 and need urgent assistance.

What isn’t covered?

You will not be covered if you:

  • Take your own life through suicide.
  • Die from being under the influence drugs or alcohol.
  • Have a pre-existing medical condition that results in death (unless otherwise stated in the policy).
  • If you die of having engaged in any illegal activities.
We won’t cover any costs within your home country once your remains are returned to your next of kin.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

How your family or friend can get assistance if you die overseas.

It’s essential that your family or travel buddy get in contact with our emergency assistance teams as soon as possible, so that our teams can support them from the time you die until your remains have returned home.

To help our Emergency Assistance teams assist them quickly, they'll need the following:

  • Your policy number
  • Your location
  • As many details as possible about the circumstances surrounding your death

So, leave a copy of your policy with your family or friend, just in case they need to use it.

How we help.

Overseas deaths are the most heartbreaking cases to help with. No one is ready to deal with the sudden death of a close relative overseas, let alone having to deal with the complex organisation and unexpected high costs. The World Nomads Emergency Assistance team can coordinate a local burial or bringing home loved ones with trusted partners on the ground, and ensure that families and friends are supported throughout such a difficult time.
