Travel Insurance for a trip to Germany

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Germany

Planning a German adventure is all about indulging in the food and top notch German beers, as well as hiking in the Bavarian Alps, and taking in the arts, culture, and history at one of Germany’s 6,200 museums covering every topic imaginable, including mustard. Before you take off, you may want to consider travel insurance to ensure that any hiccups to your plans don’t pack a knockout punch.

What’s covered?

Once your trip is locked in, next on the travel list to consider should be an insurance policy. If it’s an afterthought, that’s alright too, you can still get a policy if you’ve already set off.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each provides different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. Here are some of the highlights our cover provides for:

  • Extended stays.
  • Emergency overseas medical.
  • Cancellation and interruption coverage.
  • Baggage and personal belongings coverage.
  • Cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events.
  • Rental vehicle insurance.
  • Single, duo, or family plans.

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Germany?

As exciting as a trip to this part of Europe is for most, as with all travel not everything always goes without a hitch. If landing in Deutschland after a lengthy flight from the US or further afield only to realize your luggage hasn’t arrived with you; twisting your ankle while traversing the cobbled streets in Bremen; or the thought of your travel buddy contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) pre-trip give you the jitters, travel insurance could lessen the financial burden.

Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 and can assist with letting you know if attending a hospital is medically necessary, help you locate the nearest medical facilities (this can be beneficial in out of the way places), liaise with your treating doctor to make sure that your treatment plan is appropriate, and assist with language barriers you may face.

What to look out for when traveling around Germany?

Although mostly a safe destination, the unexpected can trip us up here just as it can anywhere. In this part of the world, pickpocketing and bag snatching are common concerns, especially when in crowded areas, so it’s best to be wary of your surroundings and belongings.

Scams are also prevalent, particularly at railway stations and riots and demonstrations can be disruptive. If you’re injured, have your possessions stolen, or your plans are cancelled due to unexpected extreme weather events, your World Nomads policy may be able to help.

Each of the two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – offer different benefits, limits, and sub-limits, so it’s best to compare them to see which suits you best. Here is a brief sample of what we cover depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected. Please check your policy wording for our complete list:

  • For loss or theft of personal belongings or for digital nomads traveling with tech gear, both levels of cover offer compensation, depending on the circumstances.
  • If you’re all set to road trip along a section of the 8,197-mile Autobahn, our Explorer Plan covers rental car excess in the event you have an accident (terms and conditions apply).
  • Adventure-seekers are advised to list the activities they are planning to undertake in the policy detail. Higher risk activities may require an additional premium.
  • In the case of COVID-19, if you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with the virus and you have to cancel your trip, we will pay the non-refundable portion of your pre-paid travel arrangements. The COVID-19 diagnosis must be made after policy purchase. For all the details including benefit limits and exclusions under our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article.

What’s not covered?

Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a US Department of State or your local government’s ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ warning.
  • Illness associated with a failure to comply with preventative measures for the travel region, as outlined by the World Health Organization.
  • Loss or damage to luggage due to age, wear and tear, loss of value. Damage to sporting equipment caused while in use.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Traveler Tip: always make sure you’ve done your research on the countries you’re planning to visit as there may be government-imposed travel bans or restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ list, then your policy will be cancelled.
