Am I covered by travel insurance if I'm scuba diving?

For policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018:

Yes, your policy offers cover for you to scuba dive abroad. You must choose the right level of adventure sport coverage, depending on what type of diving you are planning to do and an additional premium may apply.

What you need to do to be covered

If scuba diving is on your ‘to do’ list, simply add the correct ‘scuba diving’ activity to your list of adventure activities when buying your policy so you can have cover, eg 'Scuba diving - to 30 metres' or 'Scuba diving - unqualified/learn to dive course' etc. Special Conditions and Exclusions apply to certain diving activities - you may need to be certified or you may need to dive under supervision at all times, so make sure you check the policy wording so you are aware of these.

You must add all the adventures and activities you plan to try on your trip when you buy it and pay any applicable additional premium. You won’t be able to make changes after your policy is issued.

How it works:

If you become seriously ill or injured while diving and need urgent medical assistance, we cover:

  • Evacuation if it’s urgent and medically necessary (by helicopter if medically necessary and available) to get you back to land and to the nearest medical facility.

  • Emergency medical expenses overseas for treatment at the hospital or local medical centre including decompression treatment if agreed as medically necessary by your treating doctor and our Emergency Medical Assistance Service.

  • Repatriation home if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.

If something happens to you, make sure you (or someone else) contacts the Emergency Medical Assistance Service immediately and remain in contact until you no longer require treatment or assistance.

Who pays for medical treatment depends on what’s happened to you and the necessary treatment required.

What’s not covered

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Here are some of the main things that aren’t covered:

  • Any dive which takes you below your current dive qualification limits. 

  • Any dive which takes you below the scuba activity dive level you chose when buying your policy.

  • Search and rescue expenses.

  • Anything mentioned in the General Exclusions of the policy, the Specific Exclusions under Section 8 and the applicable special conditions and exclusions for the activity.

  • Any on-going medical expenses once you return to your country of residence.

Note: For policies purchased after 1 August 2019, your World Nomads policy is backed by XL Insurance Company SE. For policies purchased between 1 November 2018 and 16 January 2019, your World Nomads policy is backed by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. For policies purchased between 17 Jan 2019 and 31 July 2019, your World Nomads policy is backed by Lloyd’s Insurance Company SA.
