Am I covered if I’m injured while doing an activity/sport that has not been added to my policy?

Whether you’re out for a casual hike or planning to bungee jump, scuba dive or ski, you’ll want to know if you’re covered for all your activities. You must add any activities and sports you’ll be doing while travelling when you get a quote, because you won’t be able to add them after you’ve chosen and paid for your policy. Not adding all your favourite activities could also affect your cover if you suffer an injury.

You can review the list of activities we offer with both Standard and Explorer plans here.

For example: you’re going hiking for a few days and scuba diving at least once during your trip - you would select: the maximum elevation you’ll be hiking to; and the type of scuba diving you’ll be doing (checking whether you need to be licensed).

If you’re participating in an activity that is not listed, you must contact the Customer Service team to confirm if cover is available before you buy a policy. Cover will not be in place until we have confirmed acceptance and any additional premium is paid.

What do I do if I’m injured while doing a sport or activity?

We understand that unexpected accidents and illnesses happen, and that’s why the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team is here to help you navigate any issues you may have if you end up in hospital.

If you’re admitted to hospital, you (or someone else) must notify our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible where you know that you will be admitted as an inpatient for at least one night. Your medical expenses can be paid directly to the hospital, where possible, once cover is confirmed.

For more information on what to do if you need emergency assistance while overseas check out our Overseas Medical Treatment and Hospitalisation Helpdesk article.

What am I covered for under the different levels of activity cover?

Depending if you decide to upgrade your cover for the activities listed as Level 2, 3 or 4, you’ll be covered as follows:

  • Level 1 - automatically covers Level 1 sports, activities & experiences and non-manual work in the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan.
  • Level 2 - upgrade required - also includes Level 1 sports, activities & experiences, non-manual and manual work.
  • Level 3 - upgrade required - also includes Level 1 & 2 sports, activities & experiences, non-manual and manual work.
  • Level 4 - upgrade required - also includes Level 1, 2 & 3 sports, activities & experiences. non-manual and manual work.

Note: your cover will depend on the activities you choose at the time of policy purchase, which will then be shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Please be aware there are special exclusions and special conditions to many of our activities and sports under our policy.

What we won’t cover

While there are several situations we can cover you for, there are also some we just won't cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any adventure or sport activity not included in the level of activity cover you selected or below.
  • Training for and/or participating in an activity at a professional level.
  • Competing at an international event as a national representative.
  • Search and rescue operations to find or rescue you, as per the Policy Wording.
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you do not follow the local safety advice and warnings.
  • Medical treatment that can wait until your return to Ireland.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times.

This is not a full list of what's covered and what’s not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
