Heading to the UK? From 2 April 2025, most European travellers will need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they can set foot on British soil. If you’re Irish, you’re off the hook, but for everyone else, an ETA is a must. Here’s what you need to know to avoid any last-minute travel dramas.
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new entry requirement for travellers heading to the UK, including Northern Ireland. It applies to everyone - kids included - who enter the UK (or transit through UK by crossing through UK border control). Once approved, your UK ETA is digitally linked to your passport.
Just to be clear - an ETA isn’t a visa. It’s a quick security check to confirm you meet UK entry requirements before you arrive. Think of it like the ESTA for the US or Canada’s ETA - simple, digital, and essential if you want to breeze through immigration.
Yep! If you're a European traveller (including EU citizens) heading to the UK for tourism, business, a short stay, or even just transiting through UK border control, you'll need to apply for an ETA before you go. No ETA? No entry. Simple as that.
From this date, travellers without an ETA may be denied boarding or entry into the UK.
Applying is simple and can be done online or via a mobile app. Here’s what you’ll need:
Note: Most applications are approved (or declined) within 72 hours (3 days), but don’t leave it until the last minute—apply early to avoid any travel hiccups!
Once approved, your ETA is digitally linked to your passport and stays valid for multiple short trips within a two-year period - or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Heads up: your stay in the UK must be less than six months at a time.
If you frequently travel to the UK, you may be familiar with the single-use Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW). The good news? The UK ETA replaces it with a cheaper, multi-entry option, making travel more convenient and cost-effective.
While sorting your ETA, don’t forget to research travel insurance! We know from experience that unexpected delays, cancellations, or medical emergencies can ruin a trip. Protecting yourself with the right coverage before you go could very well turn out to be your best travel companion.

Starting 2 April 2025, you won’t be allowed to board your flight, ferry, or train to the UK if you don't have an ETA. So don’t skip this step!
Every traveller, including babies and children, need their own ETA. Parents or guardians must apply on their behalf.
Nope! The ETA isn’t a visa. It’s a quick pre-travel screening for visa-exempt travellers. If you already need a visa to visit the UK, this doesn’t apply to you.
If your ETA application is refused, you might have to apply for a standard visitor visa instead. Common reasons for rejection include errors in your application or security concerns. Double-check everything before you hit submit!
Travel insurance isn’t mandatory for visitors to the UK - but consider this - the UK might have excellent healthcare, but it won't be free if you’re not a local. Plus, things go wrong - flights get delayed, bags go missing, and accidents happen. A solid travel insurance policy can save you a lot of stress and money.
