Am I covered if I'm cycling or mountain biking?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 8 November 2022, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 8 November 2022, please see below.

Yes, your policy offers cover for you while cycling and mountain biking abroad. You must choose the right level of adventure sport coverage, depending on what you're planning to do.

What's covered

  • Cycling (incidental to the trip). Special Exclusion (v)
  • Cycling (independent cycle touring). Policy excludes intercontinental touring. Special Exclusion (v)
  • Cycling (on an organised tour). Policy excludes intercontinental touring. Special Exclusion (v) Special condition (a).
  • Cycle racing/ time trial. Special Exclusion (v)
  • Mountain biking – on road, off road, cross country, tracks and downhill trails, and incidental to the trip. Special Exclusion (v)

What you must do to be covered

All you need to do is list the specific cycling activity you want to try when buying your policy, eg 'Cycling - incidental to trip' or 'cycling - independent cycle touring' etc. Easy! Special Conditions and Exclusions apply to certain cycling activities, so be aware of these.

You must add all the adventures and activities you plan to try on your trip and pay any applicable additional premium when you buy your policy. You won’t be able to make changes after your policy is issued.

How it works

Providing you’re acting in a reasonable way, using all recommended safety equipment and necessary protective clothing, cover is available if you’re unfortunate enough to have an accident and hurt yourself while riding a bike for:
  • Evacuation if it’s urgent and medically necessary (by the most appropriate means including helicopter when necessary and available).
  • Emergency medical expenses overseas for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical centre; and/or
  • Repatriation (curtailment) home if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.

If something does happen to you and evacuation is medically necessary, you or someone with you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team immediately and remain in contact until you no longer require treatment or assistance.

Who pays for medical treatment (and by this we mean either you pay upfront and claim later or we pay) depends on what’s happened to you and the necessary treatment required.

What’s not covered

Here are some of the main things that aren’t covered:

  • Biking/cycling/mountain biking professionally i.e. you are being paid or sponsored or competing at international events as a national representative.
  • Loss, theft or damage to your bike.
  • Personal Liability while biking/cycling
  • Anything else that's listed in the General Exclusions of the policy and Specific Exclusions under Section 8.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of whether or not you have the right cover, please contact us for help.
