  • Coverage for sudden disruptions: Several unexpected situations may be covered such as sickness, natural disasters, strikes, and more

Why should you consider travel insurance for trip interruptions?

Even perfectly planned vacations don’t always go off without a hitch, and sometimes unexpected circumstances interrupt our plans. A ‘Trip interruption’ is something that causes you to end your trip early or that makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. For example, if you get severely injured or sick while travelling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.

With a single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance plan that includes trip interruption benefits, you may be reimbursed for the non-refundable, unused, prepaid money you’ve spent for things like tours, transportation, and hotel accommodations if your trip is interrupted for a covered reason. If you have an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you’re able to rejoin it later, additional transportation costs may be covered to rejoin your trip. If you need to return home early for a covered reason, you may also be eligible to be reimbursed for additional transportation costs (up to maximum limits shown in your policy documents).

Exclusions

  • Injury or illness that happens while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Flights back to your home province if you had not purchased a return ticket prior to your policy effective date
  • Trips within your home province
  • Travel advisories issued before you purchased your policy
  • Claims made if you didn’t notify us by the next business day after you became aware of a trip interruption
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that are excluded in the policy

Excluded

  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home
  • Care or treatment that is payable under any other insurance plan (travel insurance is considered secondary, or excess)
  • Ongoing treatment at home

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for trip interruption. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Do all World Nomads plans include trip interruption insurance benefits?

Yes, all single trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance plans for Canadian residents include trip interruption insurance benefits. You may be reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable expenses that you paid for in advance, but only if your situation is one of the trip interruption reasons listed in your plan wording. Maximum limits vary by plan, and if you have any questions, you’re welcome to contact us.

  • What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption insurance?

Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip.

Trip Delay coverage may help when your arrival at a trip destination is delayed and would reimburse for expenses incurred during the delay like meals and hotels.

Trip Interruption coverage may apply when something happens in the middle of the trip and you’re unable to continue on as planned, allowing you to claim for unused, prepaid, non-refundable trip costs and additional transportation costs.

  • What is the best travel insurance plan?

Only you can decide what the best travel insurance plan is for your particular needs. When you get a quote for travel insurance, you can compare the single trip and annual multi-trip plans side by side. Consider how much money you’ve spent on your trip, and review all of the plans to determine which is the best for you. If you have questions about anything, you’re welcome to contact us and we can help explain the plans.

  • Do I get my money back if I need to end my trip early?

Trip interruption coverage is offered by all single and annual multi-trip plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for unused, prepaid, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours, and/or accommodations if your trip is interrupted for a covered reason (up to maximum benefits as shown in your policy documents). Maximum limits vary by plan, and if you have any questions, you’re welcome to contact us.

  • Do trip interruption travel insurance benefits cover sickness?

You may be covered if one or more of the following people develops a medical condition as certified by a physician, or dies:

    • You or your travel companion
    • Your or your travel companion’s immediate family member
    • You or your travel companion’s caregiver
    • You or your travel companion’s key employee
    • Your or your travel companion’s business partner

If you are staying as an overnight guest of someone and they are admitted to the hospital because of a medical emergency, or they die, you may also be covered for trip interruption benefits.

  • How do I file a claim if I need to interrupt my trip?

Should something unexpected happen that causes you to interrupt your trip for a covered reason, you must notify us by no later than the next business day after you become aware of a trip interruption. You can then file a claim online. Be sure to save all your trip receipts – you’ll need to show proof of prepaid, non-refundable expenses when you submit a claim. Make sure you have documentation showing the reason for your interrupted trip as well. Depending on the reason for your interruption, you’ll need to provide required documents that may include:

    • Receipts and invoices
    • Proof of payment for the trip such as cancelled cheques or credit card statements
    • Copies of tour operator or common carrier cancellation policies
    • Itineraries
    • A statement from your physician
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.
