  • Get to safety with evacuation coverage: World Nomads’ Explorer, Epic, and Annual Multi-Trip plans include benefits for security evacuation
  • Protection for political, natural and security threats: Evacuation advisories due to political or military events, natural disasters, and physical assault may be covered
  • From crisis to safety; costs covered: You may be covered for the costs to get you to the closest safe place, plus food and lodging (up to the maximum benefit limits shown in your policy documents)

Why should you consider travel insurance for security evacuation?

You can plan the perfect family vacation but sometimes events on the ground change everything. In rare situations like natural disasters, civil unrest, or other serious threats, you may need to leave your destination quickly and get to a safer place.

That’s where travel insurance that includes security evacuation may help. If your trip is disrupted by a covered event - like an earthquake cutting short your time in New Zealand—your coverage may assist with arranging and paying for transport to a safer location.

If you need to be evacuated from your travel destination due to a covered reason, you may be covered for the costs for transportation to the closest place of safety, as well as additional costs for food and lodging. You may also be covered for transportation back home to Canada, or to your destination once it is safe (up to the maximum benefit limits shown in your policy documents). While most trips go as planned, having this kind of support in place means you’re better prepared if a situation escalates and you need to act fast.

Reasons Covered for Security Evacuation

What countries are covered by this security evacuation benefit?

If you have a World Nomads plan and qualify for this coverage, the security evacuation benefit may apply if an unexpected event occurs that’s listed as a ‘covered reason’ in your policy. This event can happen in any of the destinations included under your plan.

However, coverage doesn’t extend everywhere or in every situation. Sanctioned countries, or those with a “do not travel” advisory issued by the Canadian government, are not covered.

For full details on included and excluded destinations, it’s important to check your policy document and review the latest country coverage information

Travel Safely: Things We Recommend You Do Before Departing on an International Trip

  • Research your destination - Check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for your destination before travelling. You can view all current advisories they have listed.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad - This is a free service offered by the Government of Canada that allows them to get in touch with you if there’s an emergency situation in your destination or a personal emergency back home in Canada. You’ll get information before your trip and while you’re travelling within your destination. You must register for Canadians Abroad and notate where you’ll be travelling.
  • Learn where the closest Canadian consulate is - In the last fiscal year, the Canadian Government provided consular assistance in over 7,200 documented cases. That’s up 4% from the prior year. Hopefully you’ll never have an emergency that requires you to seek assistance from them, but it’s helpful to know where the closest office to your destination is just in case.
  • Have travel insurance information easily accessible - Save the number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team in your phone, as well as the plan number for the travel insurance plan you purchased. It’s not a bad idea to have a printed copy of this as well since some emergency situations may cause you to not have cell service or electricity. You’ll want to have this information easily accessible in case you need to seek emergency evacuation.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you’ll be - Leave an itinerary and your contact information with a friend or family member who isn’t travelling with you so that someone is aware of where you’ll be.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for security evacuation. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • If there’s a hurricane, will I be evacuated?

If an unexpected hurricane, or another covered natural disaster happens while you’re in your destination and there is enough widespread damage that it is uninhabitable, dangerous, and officially declared a disaster area by the government of the destination country, you may be evacuated and transported to the nearest place of safety if you have a World Nomads plan that includes travel insurance for security evacuation.

  • Do all travel insurance plans include security evacuation?

World Nomads has four travel insurance plans for Canadian residents – three single-trip plans and an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan. All of the plans may include travel insurance for security evacuation except the Standard Plan, which is the most basic plan. If you want to have security evacuation benefits included in your travel insurance plan, you’ll want to select from the Explorer, Epic, or Annual Multi-Trip Plans. When you get a quote for travel insurance, you can compare the maximum benefit limits for each plan and choose the plan that offers the level of coverage that you need.

  • If a travel advisory is issued for my destination before I go, can I cancel my trip?

World Nomads Travel Insurance for Canadian residents includes trip cancellation benefits, and you may cancel your trip for a covered reason – including travel advisories issued by the Government of Canada, Health Canada, or the appropriate authority at your destination country. Advisory recommendations for epidemics and pandemics are not covered, though. If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for non-refundable, prepaid, forfeited, unused expenses such as airfare, hotel accommodations, and tours (up to maximum limits as shown in your policy documents).

  • How much does it cost to get travel insurance that covers security evacuation?

When you get a quote for travel insurance for security evacuation, it will also include benefits for other unplanned situations such as emergency medical coveragetrip cancellationlost baggage, and more. You’ll input information about your trip, including the destination and dates. It just takes a few minutes and you’ll then be shown the prices for the different single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance plans. At that point, you can choose the best travel insurance plan for your needs. Please note that travel insurance for security evacuation is not included in the Standard plan. If you want to make sure that benefit is included, you’ll need to purchase the Explorer, Epic, or Annual Multi-Trip plan. If you have questions about what is included in any of the plans, contact us and ask.

  • If there’s a situation in my destination and I get hurt, are my medical expenses covered?

When you purchase travel insurance for security evacuation, your plan will include other benefits as well – including a benefit that may cover unexpected medical emergencies. If you get injured while travelling, it may cover unplanned expenses such as prescription medication, an ambulance ride, x-rays, and a hospital stay.

You must have Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) coverage in your home province for your entire trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefit. If you don't, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to $40,000.
