Why should you consider getting annual multi-trip travel insurance?

What do you do when you can’t decide between surfing in Nicaragua, going on a safari in Africa, skiing in Japan, or exploring the ancient ruins of Greece? If you’re anything like us, you book all four!  Canada also has plenty of great places to see, and Canadians are exploring within the country as well. Data from the Canadian Government shows that domestic trips are on the rise, too.

But more trips can mean more potential for unexpected travel challenges. Medical emergencieslost bags, and natural disasters are just a few of the things you can’t plan for when travelling. Instead of having to remember to buy travel insurance for each trip, annual multi-trip coverage allows you to buy one plan and be covered for a year for all trips outside of your home province that are up to 14 days. You can purchase an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan for yourself, as a couple, or a family.

Important to Know

  • Only trips outside of your home province may be covered
  • You must have Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) coverage in your home province for your entire trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefit. If you don't, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to $40,000 CAD
  • Maximum length for each trip is 14 days
  • Accidents that happen while you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol aren’t covered
  • Some adventure sports are excluded or have special conditions, so check the list of covered activities and adventure sports and refer to your policy documents for complete details

Single Trip vs. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

World Nomads offers plans for both single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance for Canadian residents, but only you can decide on the best coverage for your particular needs. We encourage you to think about your travel plans for the next year before you get a quote. Maybe you’re planning to go skiing in the Rockies in winter, celebrate Spring Break in Mexico, and take a summer vacation in Europe. Or maybe you’re more of a spontaneous traveller and don’t have all of your year’s trips planned yet. That’s ok too - we also like to keep our calendar open and jump on those last minute travel deals.

You can get a quote and compare the pricing and coverage for a single trip vs. the cost of an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan from World Nomads. Take a look at the maximum benefit amounts in your quote, and make sure they meet your needs. That will help you determine the most suitable travel insurance plan for you. If you have any questions about anything, reach out to our team and they’ll be happy to assist.

Trip Inspiration – Ideas for Where to Travel Next

With an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan, you may be covered for a year for all of your trips that are outside of your home province that are up to 14 days. If you’re planning to travel the world, but don’t know where to go, here are a few ideas from our nomads to give you a little inspiration.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about Annual Multi-Trip coverage. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Does an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan cover all of my trips?

The World Nomads annual multi-trip travel insurance plan for Canadian residents covers all of your insurable trips in a 365-day period that are outside of your home province, but the maximum length of each trip is 14 days. Your policy goes into effect on the date you chose to start your plan. This date is specified when you purchase your policy. Your policy is then valid for 365 days from this date. For specific information on coverage for each trip, you’ll want to review the maximum benefit amounts listed in your policy documents. If you have any questions about anything, reach out to our team and they’ll be happy to assist.

  • What reasons am I allowed to cancel my trip if I have travel insurance?

Trip cancellation travel insurance is included in all of the plans offered by World Nomads, including the annual multi-trip plan, and you may be reimbursed for unused, forfeited, prepaid, non-refundable expenses that you paid for in advance (up to the maximum benefit amount shown in your policy documents), if your situation is one of the cancellation reasons listed in your plan wording.

Some reasons that may be covered by travel insurance include:

    • You, your travel companion, or an immediate family member gets sick or dies (must be certified by a physician)
    • A travel advisory is issued by the Government of Canada, or the appropriate authority at your destination country, advising travellers not to go there
    • Natural disasters such as hurricanes and typhoons
    • Strikes
    • Unplanned jury duty
  • Does the annual multi-trip plan cover travel within Canada?
The World Nomads annual multi-trip travel insurance plan offers coverage for international travel, as well as travel within Canada, as long as you’re travelling outside of your home province. The maximum trip length on the Annual plan is 14 days.
  • What types of medical expenses are covered if I get injured while travelling?

World Nomads plans include travel insurance for medical emergencies that may cover a variety of expenses, including:

    • Physician fees
    • Hospital costs
    • Prescription medication
    • Tests needed to diagnose your condition
    • Ambulance transport

Just remember, you must have Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) coverage in your home province for your entire trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefit. If you don't, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to $40,000 CAD.

  • Am I covered if the airline loses my bag?

The annual multi-trip plan offered by World Nomads includes coverage for bags. If your checked bag is lost or damaged by a common carrier, you may be able to be reimbursed for certain items that you can prove you owned (maximum limits and per-item limits apply). You’ll want to speak to the airline about reimbursement first, though. Your baggage travel insurance won’t kick in until you’ve exhausted the benefits from the source of your loss. If your baggage is delayed by your airline for 12 or more hours on the way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for the costs of essential clothing and toiletries (up to the maximum limit shown in your policy documents).

  • Which travel insurance plan is the best if I’m renting a car?

World Nomads has four travel insurance plans for Canadian residents – three single-trip plans and an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan. All of the plans may include travel insurance for rental cars except the Standard Plan, which is the most basic plan. If you want to have rental car benefits included in your travel insurance plan, you’ll want to select from the Explorer, Epic, or Annual Multi-Trip Plans. The Explorer and Epic plans both offer rental car benefits for one trip, while the Annual Multi-Trip plan may provide rental car coverage for all trips outside of your home province within a 365-day period that are up to 14 days. When you get a quote for travel insurance, you can compare the maximum benefit limits for each plan and choose the plan that offers the level of coverage that you need.
